The Pentax Q is the smallest interchangeable lens camera on the market. This camera is built around a 1/2.3″ sensor. Pentax Q is a fraction of the size of even the smallest existing cameras without mirrors and is the first really pocket size model.

Pentax Q Key Features

Customisable Green button

Full HD Video recording, MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, 30fps, up to 25 minutes

P/A/S/M modes

RAW support (Silkypix Developer Studio 3.0)

230-250 shots depending on flash use

Highlight, Shadow, Lens distortion correction

Rechargeable lithium ion battery

The Q has all the bells and whistles of a dSLR including a wide ISO range (125 to 6400), built-in photo effects, different shooting modes and HDR. On the outside, there’s a new rail-thin lens mount system, a 3-inch LCD monitor and a microHDMI port that lets you watch your images and videos on an HDTV. This camera is an interesting offering. With its normal lens, it’s very compact, and with the relatively high speed of that lens (f/1.9), it should do well for available light photography, and the larger aperture should also provide improved range for the built-in flash.

The Pentax Q camera equates to a surface area of around 28mm2. It’s around 1/8th the size of the sensor used in Micro Four Thirds cameras and 1/13th the size of the APS-C format sensor in Sony’s NEX. The Pentax Q carves out an entirely new camera category that extends beyond traditional digital compact APS-C or 4/3 digital cameras. It has a backlit sensor that is highly efficient, light-gathering instrument that produces very little noise at high sensitivity levels particularly in low light settings.

The Q has a couple of advantages, including 1080/30p video, in-camera image stabilization that’s effective during movie capture and a standard hot shoe. And the Q is no toy camera, despite its modest sensor size it boasts a magnesium alloy body with rubber front coating, a 460,000 dot LCD on the rear and raw output in the DNG format. Interestingly, Pentax bucks the recent trend of trying to attract point-and-shoot users by removing those intimidating buttons with all those mysterious symbols on them as well as, includes plenty of external controls.

expertreviews.co.uk reviews writes:

“Amazingly small, frustratingly slow and worryingly expensive, but we can’t help but warm to this quirky little compact system camera.”

pocket-lint.com reviews writes:

“We didn’t start off hating the Pentax Q and, even after our First Look preview, to think that we hate it now would be a big mistake. The trouble is that it tries to be everything a camera could be only packaged into the smallest space known to man and, at first look, that’s simply not possible.
What does it bring, that few others have managed, is something that looks quite spectacular. Very pretty and, if it weren’t for the lens jutting out of the front, very pocketable too.”

newsbyme.info reviews writes:

“The advantage of using a small sensor is that both the camera body and the lenses that mount on it can be made much smaller than the average CSC. The Q is really quite tiny in comparison.”

TechRadar.com reviews writes:

“It’s great to see (and feel) that Pentax has maintained its high build quality standards for the Q, as Pentax’s new CSC seems very nicely put together.”

imaging-resource.com reviews writes:

“I love using quality cameras regardless of their size, but the trend toward smaller compact system cameras and quality pocket cameras has me intrigued.
The solid design and quality build of the Pentax Q is encouraging. May it spur innovation from others; whether it does or not, long live the Queen.”

The new Pentax Optio RZ18 camera provides photographers with simple, effortless shooting of a wide variety of subjects and occasions, from travel and landscape to action and spectator sports. While retaining many of the convenient features of its predecessors – including the dependable dual shake reduction for effective reduction of camera shake – the number of effective pixels have been increased to 16 megapixels 460,000 dots, making it easy to capture sharp and clear pictures with the Pentax RZ18.

The Optio RZ18 incorporates an HVGA high-resolution 3″ color LCD monitor. The large monitor provides a clear view of pictures and menus so photographers can easily check captured photos and menu settings. This digital camera also offers a setting to magnify the letters displayed, by which users can further enhance the legibility of the menus and the operability of the camera.

The Pentax Optio RZ18 features the original Auto Picture mode, which automatically selects the most appropriate shooting mode for a given subject or scene by accurately assessing various photographic conditions on and around the subject. This features several shooting modes and scene modes as well as special effects filters and face detection. This camera is also capable of capturing widescreen 720p HD video at 30fps.

This user-friendly mode selects one of 16 shooting modes (including Blue Sky, Sunset, Pet, and many more) and optimizes various camera settings (including sensitivity and shutter speed) for better results with minimal effort. The RZ18 captures beautiful, 720p high-definition-TV-quality movie clips (1280 x 720 pixels). With the Pentax RZ18, everyone can enjoy high-quality video shooting with minimal effort. The Pentax RZ18 will be available in black, pearl white or metallic orange.

The RZ18 also features a 16-megapixel sensor and multiple Pentax Shake Reduction image stabilization technologies, including sensor-shift SR for sharp images even when there’s less light. It has a 3-inch LCD display with HVGA resolution and a 9-point autofocus with a 4cm super macro mode.

When the Optio RZ18’s AV output terminal is used, movie clips are output as normal image-size data. If the user wishes to play back movie clips at high-definition TV proportions (1280 x 720 pixels), the data must be transferred to a personal computer for playback. When the Movie SR mode is selected, the angle of view becomes narrower than normal shooting.

This camera also features the sophisticated Face Detection AF & AE function. This sophisticated feature instantly and accurately detects as many as 32 faces within the image field, then catches them in sharp focus and optimum exposure in a mere 0.03 seconds — even when some of the faces are tilted or turned away from the camera. To assist the photographer in capturing beautiful, lively snapshots, the Optio RZ18 also comes equipped with other user-friendly features, including: the Small Face filter that makes the subject’s face appear smaller than actual in recorded images; the Smile Capture mode that automatically releases the shutter the moment the camera detects the subject’s smile; and the Blink Detection function that warns the photographer when the subject’s eyes close at the time of shutter release.

thegadgetcity.com reviews writes:

“Photographers who want more zoom, soon need to invest in an expensive bridge cameras. Pentax has developed a compact camera that can zoom to 18x (Optio RZ18).”

expertreviews.co.uk reviews writes:

“It’s the Pet Mode which Pentax has chosen to highlight, however: according to the company’s announcement, the latest revision to its pet-detection algorithm allows users to register up to three pets on the camera. During shooting, these ‘recognised’ pets are given priority over unknown beasts, meaning that your precious poodle or charming cat will always be in sharp focus even in a crowded group.”

engadget.com reviews writes:

“Guess what, amateur shooters? The superzoom just got shrunk. Pentax has just outed a new compact that touts a downright impressive 18x optical zoomer (25-450mm equivalent), with the snooping lens married to a 16 megapixel sensor, a smattering of shake reduction technologies and a 3-inch HVGA LCD ’round back.”

gadget.com reviews writes:

“With digital cameras seemingly getting more and more advanced features, it is good to know that most are still quite user-friendly. And with digital cameras being one of the more common devices for everyone, it pays to have features that are easy to deal with. Most point and shoot cameras like the new Pentax Optio RZ18 has this quality.”

The new Pentax Optio WG-1 GPS was unveiled. This camera is designed to be crushproof against pressures of up to 100 kilograms (220 pounds), dustproof, waterproof up to 10 meters (33 ft), coldproof down to -10°C (14°F) and shock-resistant for drops of up to 1.5 meters (5 ft).

****½ (4.5/5)

One of the newer additions to the proofing system is that it’s crush proof. According to the Pentax specification, the WG-1 can cope with having a weight of up to 100kg on it. In imperial measurements, this equates to just over 15 stones so it can cope with all but the portly. The area that we find the most dubious – and this is with any camera of this kind, not just the Pentax – is the cold proofing. It’s cold proof down to -10 celcius which should be ok for skiing holidays in the Alps but not so good for trips to either of the Poles.

The buttons on the Pentax Optio WG-1 GPS are quite small which is unusual for an underwater camera. They may be difficult to use in snowy conditions where you may prefer to wear gloves. The power button on the top of the camera is flush to the body which looks nice. On the back, it looks quite busy with several buttons all vying for space. Because there’s so many, they’re compacted quite small and bunched up.

The Pentax Optio WG-1 GPS’s main menu is a superimposed type so you can still see the frame behind it. It’s well spaced and clearly signed. There are two tabs for shooting and for adjusting settings. Pressing the ok button will execute commands and while not in the menu will scroll through display options, which isn’t clearly marked. In playback, pressing the menu button will bring up the previous version which doesn’t have a playback tab. If you want to do anything to the pictures in camera, you have to press down on the navigation pad which is listed on the screen, it’s just an unusual way of doing things.

There are a few design elements to this camera that appear to have no immediate valid reason other than for it to look chunky. We can see the logic: the camera is supposed to be robust and if it looks slim and slinky, people may think it won’t cope with the dropping and the crushing. Because of this design approach, we think the camera will only really appeal to a select few. Sure, the adventurous types that like extreme sports or holidaying in the cold will be interested but will they like the design? It’s a critical point because with some people looks can be everything.

REVIEWS:

photographyblog.com reviews writes:

“Essentially, the Pentax Optio WG-1 GPS is well thought out with a bunch of stuff for the user to do and bring some fun into photography. It will cope with most areas of the world as long as you don’t go too high or deep. So if you’re looking for a tough camera to take on a special trip around the world and you want to document where you were as well as what happened, then the WG-1 GPS will do all that for you.”

digitalcamerareview.com reviews writes:

“I said at the outset that the WG-1 was notable for its ability to survive conditions that would kill or disable most other compacts, and after living with it for three weeks nothing has changed. Survivability is the WG-1′s strong suit. But the camera also can produce nice images – not the best I’ve seen from a compact, but far from the worst – and that combined with the toughness to withstand the elements makes it a good choice for outdoor types or anyone wanting a bit more durable camera.”

reviews.cnet.co.uk reviews writes:

“Tougher than old boots, the Pentax Optio WG-1 rugged camera is ready for almost anything. It takes a decent photo too, and comes with some useful bonus features.”

steves-digicams.com reviews writes:

“If you’re anything like me, every piece of gear you have must be able to be as durable and dependable as you are. Pentax answers the call with their newest camera in their rugged series: the “carry-it’s-own-weight” Optio WG-1. This lifeproof camera is tough enough to keep up with you, and perhaps might even have a little more adventure left at the end of the day than you do. “

The Pentax Optio I-10 captures flawless movie clips at 16:9 high-definition TV proportions (1280 x 720 pixels) at 30 frames per second. The Pentax I-10 features a wide angle and 5X optical zoom lens (28mm-140mm equivalent).

Our Rating ****~ (4/5)

With 12.1 effective megapixels and the camera’s high performance Pentax zoom lens, the camera delivers brilliant and high quality images. The camera incorporates an advanced CCD-shift-type Shake Reduction (SR) mechanism.

The nostalgic, eye-catching design of the camera resembles classic film SLR cameras.Pentax positioned the flash unit and speaker in the upper mid-section of the camera body to create this original SLR-shaped body, and the leatherette texture and classic 20th century Pentax logo add elegance to the camera design.

The Pentax camera features an optical 5X zoom lens that covers focal lengths from 5.1mm to 25.5mm equivalent in the 35mm format to approximately 28mm wide angle to 140mm telephoto).

This wide zoom range allows the camera to capture a wide variety of subjects and scenes from breathtaking landscapes, majestic architecture and group shots in a confined space,to tightly cropped photos shot from a distance. An Intelligent Zoom function allows even tighter zoom on subjects and extends the digital zoom range to approximately 31.3X.For optimal image capture, the camera features a mechanical sensor shift Shake Reduction system and improved Pixel Track Shake Reduction technology for blur-free images as well as Smile Capture, Blink Detection and improved Face Detection that spots up to 32 faces including dogs and cats. Furthermore, the camera offers Eye-Fi connectivity capability for use with Eye-Fi wireless memory cards.

DCR reviews writes:
“I was pleased with the pictures I took outdoors. Images were sharp and clear. Colors are a bit saturated, but pleasantly so. When taking photos of flowers the bright colors did not overwhelm the details of the flowers.”
Rating: ★★★½☆

ePhotozine writes:
“For this low price you are getting a camera capable of taking good images, although performance at ISO400 and above isn’t great. Users will enjoy using the wide range of scene modes and digital filters and an extra bonus is the HD movie mode. “
Rating: ★★★★½

NeutralDay writes:
“Focusing is pretty fast in good lighting, but the camera can get tripped up in poor lighting conditions even with its AF assist light. Users can choose from multiple, spot, and tracking focus areas,”
Rating: ★★★☆☆

PhotographyBlog writes:
“In terms of low light performance, the showing is pretty much what you’d expect it to be like for £199; which is to say unproblematic in terms of visible image noise and degradation of the picture up to and including ISO 800. “
Rating: ★★★★½

PCAuthority writes:
“The camera’s image quality is a mixed bag. Automatic exposures were rarely poor, but weren’t quite as balanced as other compact cameras managed. ISO 800 and 1600 shots displayed excessive noise, and the Auto ISO setting used ISO 800 for flash-lit shots when ISO 100 would have given better results.”
Rating: ★★★☆☆

Cameras.uk writes:
“The Optio i-10 looks radically different to other digital cameras. It has a design based on vintage SLRs. In my tests I found more distant shots lacked sharpness. Aside from the design the features included in this camera are fairly standard.“
Rating: ★★★★☆

WDC writes:
“Performance is quite reasonable, albeit basic, and it’s only really when considering some other similarly-priced models on the market that the I-10 feels a little outshone…. Overall the camera is a fashionable looker – particularly in the white finish – that falls short of the mark based on the images it produces.“
Rating: ★★★★★

Steve’sDigicams writes:
“The I-10 is a nice ultra-compact camera that takes good quality images and video for a model in this category. The retro looks adds style to the mix as well. With a street price of $250 US, the Optio I-10 offers a competitive value…”
“Surely a cheap, lightweight point-and-shoot model can’t really deliver the goods? Well, given some decent lighting conditions, the H90 certainly can: we took it out on a sunny day and snapped some very nice shots demonstrating an adeptness with colour, contrast and detail.”

Pocket-lint writes:
“Designed with minimalism in mind but with a range of suitably functional features, the H90 certainly fits the part: smart, small, stylish and easy to use. The H90 lacks optical image stabilisation and an optical viewfinder, however a superb set of features, great price and HD movies combined with good picture quality sweeten the pill”
“Image quality from ISO 80-200 is fairly good, with clear resulting images, but quality and colour begin to dwindle thereafter as a result of noise reduction. From ISO 400 colors begin to ‘dull’ and vibrancy is lost, a result that rises exponentially through to ISO 1600. “

TrustedReviews writes:
“The Pentax Optio H90 is a well made and attractively designed camera at a very affordable price. It is easy to use and light enough for a shirt pocket, with good performance and a useful zoom range.
The Optio H90 captures beautiful, flawless movie clips at HD-TV proportions (720p) at 30 frames per second.

This mode also offers a variety of editing functions: still images can be extracted from movie clips, and title images can be added to the beginning and/or end of a movie clip.

The Optio M90 features a very compact body that fits into the palm of a hand and houses an optical wide-angle 5 times zoom, where an angle of view equivalent to approximately 28mm to 140mm in 35mm format can be achieved. This angle view makes it possible to capture a full group of people or whole architecture in the frame, without needing to step backwards, and to zoom further when taking photos of landscapes, commemorative photos and portraits.
4. Automatic functions for easy camera operation
The Optio M90 features the advanced Auto Picture mode, which automatically selects the most appropriate shooting mode for a given subject or scene by detecting the subject’s lighting and other conditions. In addition, there are another 20 scene modes, which include the Auto-Panorama mode for composing photographs into one panoramic picture, a Backlight mode to capture perfect pictures even with sun in the background, a Copy mode , which acts as a mini-scanner, and a Auto-tracking mode to follow and focus on the subject even if it moves out of the centre of the frame.
The Optio M90 also features the upgraded Face Detection AF & AE function, as well as the Smile function which automatically releases the shutter the instant it detects the subject’s smile, and the Blink detection mode, which warns the photographer when the subject’s eyes close at the time of shutter release.

5. Other features
1) Large 2.7-inch colour LCD monitor with approximately 230,000 dots, treated with AR (Anti-Reflection) coating to minimise reflections
2) High-sensitivity anti-shake mode of ISO 1600, to minimise camera shake and subject shake at indoor events and for fast-moving subjects
6) Movie-clips of 640×480 pixels, 30 frames per second
7)Camera supplied with a Lithium-ion battery and a charger

Our Rating ****~ (4/5)

Good: Robust enough to allow pictures that would prove impossible for standard cameras, more compact mobile phone-like dimensions than we’re used to from a camera of this ilk, plus unique creative features and image quality that’s better than expected

Bad: You’ll pay extra over a non-protected digicam, and the modest battery life is its Achilles’ heel

Despite its compact dimensions, the Pentax Optio W90 features an optical 5X zoom lens covering focal lengths from 5mm to 25mm (equivalent in the 35mm format to approximately 28mm wide angle to 140mm telephoto).

Thanks to this wide zoom range, the Pentax W90 can be used for a wide variety of subjects and scenes, from spectacular landscape, majestic architecture and group shots to tight snapshots from a distance.

We also expect that the new Pentax Optio camera features the Intelligent Zoom function. Coupled with this function, the Pentax Optio W90 allows even tighter zooming in on the subject.

The Pentax W90 waterproof digital camera features the advanced Face Recognition, a great tool in casual shooting of people. This user-friendly function automatically detects multiple faces in the image field, then optimizes their focus and exposure settings. The Pentax W90 is also equipped with the Smile Capture mode, which automatically releases the shutter the moment the camera detects the subject’s smile, as well as the Blink Detection function, which warns the photographer when the subject’s eyes close at the time of shutter release.

Steve’sDigicams writes:
“Overall, the camera produces nice 12-megapixel photos for a camera in this price range. Outdoors the camera captured good exposures with accurate color reproduction. Images are also nice and sharp, with only slight edge softness along the right hand side of the frame.”
Rating: N/A

PhotographyBlog writes:
“Overall though, the W90 acquits itself better than expected. And whilst it’s not the sharpest compact we’ve ever seen, it nevertheless delivers a consistent and so reliable performance in terms of image quality that puts it up there with Panasonic’s rugged offerings and slightly betters that of recent Mju Toughs..”
Rating: ★★★★☆

DigitalVersus writes:
“The W90 is pleasant to use and has a nice design. Unfortunately the technology isn’t really up to scratch, as there’s no real stabilisation system and picture quality is nothing more than average..”
Rating: ★★★☆☆

Pocket-lint writes:
“One of the more successful attempts at a toughened digicam; though it’s pricier than the average point and shoot this looks the part and takes decent images too”
Rating: ★★★★☆

ImagingResource writes:
“The camera is missing some pieces, such as optical image stabilization, and it’s HD video recording leaves a lot to be desired. Still, the camera does not want for features, leaving you plenty to play with when you’re done subjecting it to nature’s wrath. Better yet, the image quality’s pretty good for a rugged camera, earning it a Dave’s Pick in the Underwater/Tough, Macro and Travel categories.”
