12.4 effective megapixels
The K-x incorporates a newly developed CMOS image sensor to assure high-speed image data readout and more flexibility with varying ISO sensitivity levels. With approximately 12.4 effective megapixels, this image sensor accurately reproduces true-to-life images with fine detail and rich color depth. The
K-x offers a wide sensitivity range between ISO 200 and ISO 6400 and allows users to expand the sensitivity range between ISO 100 and ISO 12800 via a custom function to offer greater creative freedom to photographers.

Compact, lightweight body
The PENTAX K-x is one of the most compact, lightweight digital SLR cameras in its class. The stainless-steel chassis and overall design offer a space-efficient layout.

Widescreen HD movie recording at 1280×720 pixels at a cinematic 24 frames per second (720p24)
The PENTAX K-x movie recording function*1 captures true-to-life movie clips in 16:9 high-definition TV proportions (1280 x 720 pixels) at a frame rate of 24 frames per second. Compatible with every PENTAX interchangeable lens ever made, the Video Capture mode opens a new world of creativity for PENTA K-x owners.

PENTAX-original SR mechanism for sharp, blur-free images
The Pentax K-x features the PENTAX-developed Shake Reduction mechanism that effectively compensates for the adverse effects of camera shake by as much as four shutter steps. This innovative mechanism extends its benefits to all PENTAX interchangeable lenses — even those designed for film-format cameras.*2 With this SR mechanism, the K-x produces sharp, blur-free images even under demanding conditions such as telephoto lens photography, shooting in dark or low-light setting without a flash illumination, and sunset scenes.

High-speed continuous shooting at approximately 4.7 images per second
The K-x’s high-speed continuous shooting mode records as many as 17 images (in JPEG recording format) at a maximum speed of approximately 4.7 images per second. This is the fastest of all entry-class models. The K-x also features a more reliable shutter unit, which passed a demanding action test of more than 100,000 shutter releases. The top shutter speed of 1/6000 second allows the photographer to preserve sharp, crisp images of fast-moving subjects.

High-performance, high-speed PRIME II imaging engine
The K-x features the newly developed PRIME (PENTAX Real IMage Engine) II, that is an upgrade of the original PRIME imaging engine. This new imaging engine offers greater data processing speed and enhanced capability to produce higher-quality images with richer, more accurate color rendition, as well as faster transmission speed of movie data.

Live View function with Face detection of up to 16 faces
In addition to the camera’s viewfinder, the camera features a Live View function that allows users to view subjects on the LCD monitor during shooting. The K-x also offers a choice of three different focusing modes in Live View:
Contrast Auto Focus optimizes the focus based on the subject’s contrast.
Face Detection Auto Focus automatically detects up to 16 faces, then selects the main subject’s face from multiple faces, and captures it in sharp focus.
Phase Difference Auto Focus accesses the AF sensor positioned in the camera body to optimize focus on the subject.

Innovative Image Processing Functions

Digital Filter function
The cameras’s digital filter function allows users to process recorded images in a variety of creative ways within the camera and produce highly creative visual expressions. With a choice of 16 different filters including Color Extract, Retro, Soft, Starburst, Toy Camera, and more (including a custom filter for building multiple effects), photographers may apply multiple filters to a single image for customized effects.

Cross Process mode
The camera features a new Cross Process mode that automatically and randomly adds finishing touches to exposures to create eye-catching images with unique, intriguing colors (just like images treated with Cross Process*3 in film photography). This mode adds a whimsical element to digital photography since photographers don’t know the results until the captured image is actually displayed on the camera’s LCD monitor.

High-precision 11-point AF sensor
The high-precision, wide-frame SAFOX VIII autofocus system of the camera features 11 sensor points (with nine cross-type sensors positioned in the middle) to automatically capture even off-centered subjects in sharp, crisp focus. Photographers also may select one of the sensors as a focusing point to accommodate specialized applications.

DCRP writes:

“Despite a few flaws, most of which are minor, the Pentax K-x is an impressive entry-level digital SLR. It brings very good image quality (especially with a decent lens), snappy performance, tons of features, HD movie recording, and good build quality to the table for under $650 (with a lens). If you’re looking for your first digital SLR, then the camera should be high on your list.”

The Pentax X90 is equipped with an HDMI-micro output, allowing you to enjoy your own movies on a HD TV monitor. This camera captures High Definition video clips in 1280×720 pixels at 30 frames per second. This camera also features Movie SR mode, which effectively minimizes annoying camera shake during movie capture.

The camera features a Face Detection function which is effective for capturing casual snapshots of people by optimizing the focusing and exposure of up to 32 faces in a single image in approximately 0.03 seconds. The X90 megazoom camera also offers other user-friendly functions including Smile Capture which automatically releases the shutter the instant it detects the subject’s smile, and Blink Detection which warns the photographer when the subject’s eyes are closed at the moment of capture.

The Pentax X90 features also the upgraded Face Detection AF & AE function, which automatically detects up to 32 faces in the image field in a mere 0.03 seconds and captures them in great accuracy and with superb clarity, even when the faces are tilted or turned sideways. It also offers a new Small Face filter, which makes the subject’s face appear slightly smaller than in reality in recorded images. In addition, the X90 offers other user-friendly functions designed to produce beautiful portraits with ease: the Smile Capture function, which automatically releases the shutter the instant it detects the subject’s smile; and the Blinking Detection function, which warns the photographer when the subject’s eyes close at the time of shutter release.

The build quality is still up to Pentax’s usual high standard, with tight panel joins and a strong metal hinge on the battery/card hatch. The large comfortable handgrip has a textured rubber surface, and there is a textured rubber thumbgrip on the back. The control layout is well designed with large clearly labelled buttons, and the camera is very comfortable and pleasant to handle. The LCD monitor is nice and sharp, and bright enough to work well outdoors even in bright sunlight. It has a good angle of view in every direction except downwards, annoying really because that’s one direction you need a wide view, for shooting over obstacles.

The Pentax X90 incorporates the PENTAX-original CCD-shift-type SR (Shake Reduction) system to assure sharply focused, blur-free images even under demanding photographic conditions prone to camera shake, such as when using the zoom lens’s super-telephoto range or when shooting a sunset or indoor scene with incident light only.

The X90 offers plenty of features, but most of them are exactly the same as the X70. Externally it’s hard to tell the two cameras apart. The overall body design is almost identical, apart from the X90′s slightly longer lens barrel with a totally cosmetic knurled ring around the end of it. The colour is different too; where the X70 was available in matt black only, the X90 is an attractive blue-grey colour with a slight crackle finish.

The X90 digital SLR camera captures high-quality movie clips, equivalent in image quality to that of high-definition TV (1280 x 720 pixels), in 30 frames per second. It also features the Movie SR (Shake Reduction) mode, which effectively minimizes annoying camera shake during movie shooting through the use of exclusive software. As a result, the photographer enjoys high-quality, blur-free movie shooting with minimal effort. It is even equipped with an HDMI micro terminal for audio/video signal output, allowing the enjoyment of high-resolution movies simply by connecting the camera with a high-definition TV monitor.

This SLR has a combination of approximately 12.1 effective megapixels, a sophisticated imaging engine and a high-quality PENTAX zoom lens, the X90 delivers super-clear, high-quality images. It even allows the photographer to choose the preferred finishing touch from Bright, Natural or Monotone.

The X90 features the advanced Auto Picture mode, which automatically selects the most appropriate shooting mode for a given subject or scene by detecting the subject’s lighting and other conditions. This user-friendly mode not only makes the right mode choice for the photographer from Landscape, Portrait, Night Scene, Night Scene Portrait, Flower, Sport or Standard modes, but also features an auto macro mode, which automatically switches the camera’s focus range to macro in close-range applications.

“In operation the X90’s 9-point AF takes just over a second to determine focus and exposure with a half press of its shutter release button… Like its zoom range, ISO sensitivity is also respectably broad, stretching from ISO 80 through to ISO 6400, though performance is in fact fairly average.”
Rating: ★★★★☆

PhotographyBlog writes:

“The camera handled chromatic aberrations excellently during the review, with very limited purple fringing present around the edges of objects in high-contrast situations… in terms of light sensitivity, up to ISO 800 the X90’s performance is pretty good, though detail is beginning to soften at ISO 800.”

Steve’sDigicams writes:

DCI writes:

“The X90 is also quite easy to use, with great button implementation and a simple, easy-to-navigate menu system. One significant downside to the camera is its diminutive size, which is great for portability, but not for comfort.“

“In the end, even though I wanted to love it for its design, the Pentax X90’s performance stifled any affection. Any way you spell it, the Pentax X90 is close but gets no cigar. The Pentax X90 is not a bad camera by any means, but we’d steer you toward others for better quality and performance for the price.”

MacWorld writes:

“In terms of picture quality, sensor shift anti-shake is fairly good at preventing blur when shooting at the maximum optical telephoto setting or in low light, although images appear quite noisy and lose detail at ISO1600 and above.”
Rating: ★★★★½

whatdigitalcamera.com writes:

“The 645D will no doubt attract a niche audience, though its almost-£10k price tag is firmly out of reach for the majority. The experience of using a medium format digital camera is very different from a DSLR and has many advantages, especially for landscape photographers. To be clear: the 645D is less of a studio camera than its competition, but its weather-sealed single body design firmly fixes it as one to use in the field or where large, resolute files are a must. However the vertical run shutter, non-customisable construction and no tethered shooting ability may pose issues for certain users. However its handling is a winner and easy to pick up. For general use a pro-level DSLR still has more versatility but, so long as speed’s no issue, the Pentax 645D is a pleasure to use.”

ephotozine.com writes:

“If I had to judge the cameras on image quality alone then the Pentax would be a clear winner. Unfortunately life isn’t that straightforward, and as the Canon excels in some areas and the Pentax is superior in others I find it impossible to choose a clear winner in this comparison. Your choice will depend on what you shoot, at the end of the day.”

pentaxforums.com reviews writes:

“Some might say that for a medium-format camera, the 645D is relatively cheap and therefore must be second rate. This isn’t the case, however. Instead of cutting corners when it came to image quality and core design, Pentax decided to re-use many components from their K-7 (such as the LCD screen, firmware, and processor) in the 645D in order to keep costs down.”

“the K-5 keeps noise to a Low or better rating up to ISO 400. It remains in acceptable territory up to ISO 1600 and just barely edges into an Unacceptable rating at ISO 3200. Even a judicious use of noise reduction will bring that into our acceptable range without a serious effect on resolution, which remains at an Excellent rating up to ISO 12,800 using Pentax’s default noise-reduction settings “

The Pentax K-r features a large, 3″ high-resolution color LCD monitor with approximately 921,000 dots. The Pentax K-r DSLR is equipped with a spotbeam projector to assist the AF system in poorly lit locations.

The compact, lightweight Pentax K-r is easy to use with Auto Picture, Scene, and Custom Image Processing modes that take the guesswork out of shooting stunning images while still offering a high degree of manual and priority control. The Pentax K-r DSLR offers a variety of new and improved features including a fast framerate, high ISO sensitivity, responsive autofocus, an improved 12.4 megapixel low-noise sensor and widescreen HD video capture that take it a step above an entry-level DSLR camera.

This camera has a deep, contoured handgrip on the right-hand side, coated in a rubberized compound to aid grip, that enabled me to use three fingers to hold it and my right forefinger to operate the shutter button. There is a generous contoured area where your right thumb sits, with the rest of the body finished in a textured matt black plastic. The K-r thankfuly dispenses with the rather strange, thin and cheap-looking silver rim that runs around the K-x, making it look like a more serious proposition.

The Pentax K-r DSLR incorporates a new generation CMOS image sensor with 12 megapixels and the high-performance PRIME (Pentax Real Image Engine) II imaging engine for accurate and high-speed data processing equal to that of upper-level Pentax digital SLR models for high-quality images. The Pentax K-r DSLR camera also offers a wide sensitivity range between ISO 200 and ISO 12800 that may be expanded from ISO 100 to ISO 25600 via a custom function.

The K-r is the first Pentax digital SLR camera, and indeed the first DSLR, to feature the IrSimple high-speed infrared data transmission system, the sensor for which is built-into the handgrip. This allows wireless image transfer from camera to camera, or from camera to a web page via a mobile phone, allowing easy sharing with other K-r users and perhaps more usefully uploading downsized images to the web.

It features the same high-speed PRIME (PENTAX Real Image Engine) II imaging engine as the K-7 and K-x. It takes less than a second to store a single JPEG image at the highest quality setting with no discernible lockup between taking shots, allowing you to keep shooting as they are being recorded onto the memory card. For single RAW images the Pentax K-r is just as fast, again with no lockup between shots. In the fastest continuous shooting mode you can hold down the shutter button and take a very speedy 6 frames per second for up to 25 JPEGS or 12 RAW files, or there’s a slower 2fps mode available which allows you to shoot JPEGs until the memory card becomes full or 36 RAW files. This makes the K-r the quickest Pentax DSLR camera and also one of the quickest in its class in terms of continuous shooting speed.

The rear screen doubles as a comprehensive status display, which can be called up by pressing the OK button in record mode. If you then press the INFO button, you can also change all the settings right on the screen using a combination of the navigation pad and the rear e-dial. This ingenious solution spares you the pain of having to enter the menu, and makes most setting changes very simple. The colour temperature of the screen can be modified if you think it doesn’t match that of your calibrated computer monitor, but the contrast and gamma cannot be altered.

Pentax K-r features:

- 12.4-megapixel CMOS image sensor (100-25600 ISO range)

- 6 FPS framerate that captures 25 images in a single sequence

- 720p HD video at 25 FPS

- Shake Reduction mechanism

- Dust Removal mechanism

- 3-inch, 921K dot display (170 degree viewable)

- In-camera image processing and Special Effects filters

- 11 point SAFOX IX autofocus system

- Choice of rechargeable lithium-ion or 4 AA batteries

- In-camera HDR image capture

The K20D has a bright and reasonably large viewfinder with 0.95-times magnification and 95% accuracy – above average for cameras in this price range.

- Specifications

The PENTAX K20D also has the Program Auto, Sensitivity Priority (Sv), Shutter Priority (Tv), Aperture Priority (Av), Shutter and Aperture Priority (TAv) and Manual exposure modes that are the standard features (plus a few unique options) on any DSLR. The K20D also features a Bulb mode (B), which allows you to manually control how long the shutter remains open for extremely long exposures. The X-Sync mode automatically defaults to the standard flash sync speed for the K20D: 1/180 seconds. User mode is a custom mode that the photographer can preset to their favorite shooting mode and settings.

The Image quality of K20D is also impressive. The switch to CMOS not only gave Pentax the capability to add Live View shooting, it also let them get better control over noise at higher ISOs. Strangely, you’ll still notice a fair amount of speckles at ISO 3,200 and ISO 6,400 on the K20D, but that’s partially because the camera defaults to minimal noise reduction. You can turn that up if you like, but we preferred it low because that let the images retain a large amount of finer detail that becomes blurred away on a lot of other cameras. The sensor-shift Shake Reduction certainly helps to keep images blur-free to an extent, but it could probably be more effective. We were able to get more than one stop of leeway — meaning we could shoot at a shutter speed less than half as fast as we normally would.

The PENTAX K20D incorporates a newly developed image sensor to bring out the optimum performance of PENTAX interchangeable lenses. Its is a 2.7 inch LCD with 230,000 dots and adjustable brightness levels. The monitor itself is a “wide view” type with a viewing angle of more than 140 degrees both vertically and horizontally. You can easily show images to multiple people using the camera’s monitor, and images can be magnified up to 12x magnification. The monitor also includes a “Live View” mode which allows you to compose shots with the LCD (more on that later).

The K20D has 72 rubber seals in its little body to keep out moisture and dust. For example, if you open the battery compartment door, you’ll notice the small O-ring around the rim of the door. Speaking of batteries, the K20D’s 1620mAh lithium ion rechargeable battery will give you up to 530 shots per charge when using the flash for 50 percent of those shots, though that climbs to 740 shots per charge if you don’t use the flash at all. Of course, that doesn’t compare terribly well with the 40D’s rating of 800 images with 50 percent flash or 1,100 without.

The camera also offers an array of advanced features and user-friendly functions, including: a new Custom Image function that lets the user select or adjust the image’s finishing touches to their preference; an upgraded, more reliable SR (Shake Reduction) system; a comprehensive Dust Removal system; a multi-mode exposure system for faithful reproduction of the photographer’s creative intentions; and a dependable dust-proof, water-resistant body construction. As a result, the K20D easily meets the diversified, exacting demands of discerning photographers.

The K20D development is based on the popular PENTAX K10D, which not only attracted great interest and high acclaim from users around the world, but also swept prestigious camera awards across the globe in 2007. The new CMOS image sensor, exclusively developed for the K20D, has been designed to optimize the performance of PENTAX interchangeable lenses. Featuring approximately 14.6 effective megapixels and the latest noise-reduction technology, it assures superb image quality a step above its predecessors.

“noise isn’t a practical factor until ISO 800, edges are well-preserved, and even at ISO 1,600 8×10-inch prints are excellent. .. When used properly the K20D can produce excellent images, making it easy to declare it a Dave’s Pick.”

“The K20D is a joy to use. From its spirited (yet pretty loud) auto focus to its awesome menu system and custom features, the camera leaves very little for a professional to be desired… It has impressed me much more than irritated me and for that, makes a very solid design.”
Rating: ★★★★☆

PCWorld writes:

“The camera delivered very good image quality overall in the PC World Test Center’s digital camera tests. Even so, the competition–including models from Canon, Nikon, and Olympus–outperformed this Pentax.”

GoodGearGuide writes:

“It produces some of the crispest, sharpest pictures of any camera in its class. It also has a stack of features, including live view and sensor-based stabilisation. Some users will want a faster burst mode or better live view implementation. Nonetheless, this is a great option for enthusiasts.”
Rating: ★★★★½

CameraLabs writes:

“we can easily recommend the K20D, but its relatively high price, disappointing Live View, tendency to underexpose and uncomfortable positioning rules out our Highly Recommended award.”

The Pentax K7 Digital SLR Camera was designed not only to assure outstanding image quality, but also to provide exceptional ease and comfort of operation and the utmost satisfaction to photo enthusiasts of all levels, including advanced amateurs.

With the introduction of the K-7, Pentax appears to be positioning itself as a leader in the rugged camera category, making a smaller camera that is better sealed against the elements, with 77 seals that deliver “weather, dust, and cold resistance.” That latter point is perhaps the most unique, with no other digital SLR of this class offering a promise of durability down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit. In addition, it has added several user-friendly features, including video recording, high dynamic range (HDR), and automatic horizon correction.
“Featuring a solid body with a chassis made from high-rigidity stainless-steel alloy and housing of durable but lightweight magnesium steel alloy, the K-7 has 77 special seals to make it weatherproof, dustproof and cold-resistant.”

“Pentax K-7 is a superb camera, and really puts the cat among the pigeons at the top of the APS-C DSLR market. It has rugged weatherproof build quality, superb handling and offers every creative feature you could possibly want and more besides. Performance and image quality are a match for anything else in its class. It’s a tempting package for any keen amateur or semi-pro. “

“the K-7 is much, much faster at locking on than the K200D and the 50mm f/1.4 that I primarily use with the K200D feels alive. However, I did notice that the K-7 struggled to lock onto multiple subjects even in continuous AF mode and would focus in on something stationary that didn’t seem to be focused on from my point of view.”

“Small, solid, and sealed, the Pentax K7 makes a superb candidate for the outdoor photographer, occupying the space of a small Rebel, but with the ruggedness to handle both wet and cold weather like a pro. When you make the Pentax K7 your daily shooter, the interface becomes second nature, and you can focus on your photography.”

“The camera’s new kit lens is suitably sharp and benefits from the weather sealing; I used the 18-55mm kit zoom for this test and performance is very good, but in the final analysis, what we have here is a camera that is well made, provides a stunning array of features, has superb build and styling and is perfectly suited to the market into which it is pitched.”

NeoCamera writes:

“Image quality is very good with generally low noise and high details. Color accuracy and white-balance are impressive and extremely flexible, as are image parameters for detailed control over the way images are captured. The K-7 is also a fast and responsive camera..”

PhotoReview.au writes:

“Camera response times were occasionally slower than competing DSLRs. Although the review camera powered-up smartly in a little less than one second, the average capture lag of 0.5 seconds is significantly slower than most recent DSLRs we’ve tested. With pre-focusing, this lag reduced to less than 0.1 seconds, which is par for the course.”

“Pros: Great overall RAW image quality. Packed to the brim with features. Excellent lens compatibility. Cushy handling and advanced interface made shooting a delight.Cons: Inconsistent HD video quality. Menu graphics could use a little sprucing up. Certain features like HDR mode require more effort than expected. “

“Image quality is great. Comparing the JPEG with the converted RAW of the same image the JPEG is noticeably noisier. The difference between JPEG and RAW files is more marked as you ascend the ISO scale, until you hit ISO 6400, where the JPEG looks smoother than the RAW.”

“The K-7’s image quality is very good. Exposures were generally 1/3rd EV stop under-exposed, perfect for retaining detail in the highlight areas without sacrificing the shadow areas too much, and colours were accurate using the default Bright setting. The HDR mode makes it easy to create images with greatly expanded dynamic range”
