The Canon HFG10 features a professional HD CMOS Pro Sensor and a 30mm optical wide angle lens with an 8 blade iris as seen on some of Canon’s professional video cameras. It delivers outstanding HD quality with wide dynamic range even in low light situations. Offering plenty of manual and creative control the HFG10 is a perfect creaitve tool for the promising videographer. Plus you can shoot for hours with the 32GB internal memory and expand the memory capacity with the dual card slots.

The Canon Legria HF G10 records at 60i, in native 24p, and in the 24p Cinema mode and 30p Progressive mode (both at 60i). With the 24p frame rate options you can give your footage a truly cinematic look. Using Cinema-Looks Filters you boost that film look with 9 built-in adjustable filters. Some choices include Cinema Standard, Dramatic B&W, Nostalgic, Old Movie, and Sepia. You can also shoot video that’s optimized for the ‘net with the 30p Progressive mode.

The G10 also features include a 10x optical zoom, a 58mm filter diameter, and a number of terminals. Connections include USB 2.0, Component and Composite outputs, a mini HDMI, and as one would expect on a model of this caliber, headphone and microphone jacks. Whether you’re shooting for a film look and feel or simply recording a family get-together, good audio makes your production. Canon gave the HF G10 multiple ways to achieve high-quality sound recording, including the aforementioned built-in microphone and headphone terminals.

The HF G10 allows you to record up to 12 hours of clear high definition video to a 32GB internal flash drive or to two SDXC-compatible memory card slots. With Relay Recording, the camcorder automatically switches video recording from the internal drive to the SD memory cards when the memory becomes full. No need then to worry about running out of recording time during a thrilling, once-in-a-lifetime shot. With SDXC memory card compatibility, you’ll have card storage capacity from more than 32GB up to 2TB and ultra-fast data transfer speeds.

The Powered IS option (a button to the bottom left of the screen) can be used to achieve more stabilisation at the telephoto reach. It’s incredibly effective at stabilising the image at 10x optical zoom, though you do need to press and hold it, and the positioning of the button means that, ergonomically, things are a little hard to handle. Unfortunately, battery life is particularly short with all the use of the touchscreen and Powered IS, meaning that time between recharges is uncomfortably short.

The Canon G10 produces nice-looking still images, though not decent enough for any enlargement beyond an 11x20cm print. Colours are vivid without being oversaturated, and the camcorder exposes correctly pretty much all the time. Dynamic range is excellent with good definition between shadow and highlight areas, with only a really small amount of blown highlights in extreme situations.
