The Canon HFG10 features a professional HD CMOS Pro Sensor and a 30mm optical wide angle lens with an 8 blade iris as seen on some of Canon’s professional video cameras. It delivers outstanding HD quality with wide dynamic range even in low light situations. Offering plenty of manual and creative control the HFG10 is a perfect creaitve tool for the promising videographer. Plus you can shoot for hours with the 32GB internal memory and expand the memory capacity with the dual card slots.

The Canon Legria HF G10 records at 60i, in native 24p, and in the 24p Cinema mode and 30p Progressive mode (both at 60i). With the 24p frame rate options you can give your footage a truly cinematic look. Using Cinema-Looks Filters you boost that film look with 9 built-in adjustable filters. Some choices include Cinema Standard, Dramatic B&W, Nostalgic, Old Movie, and Sepia. You can also shoot video that’s optimized for the ‘net with the 30p Progressive mode.

The G10 also features include a 10x optical zoom, a 58mm filter diameter, and a number of terminals. Connections include USB 2.0, Component and Composite outputs, a mini HDMI, and as one would expect on a model of this caliber, headphone and microphone jacks. Whether you’re shooting for a film look and feel or simply recording a family get-together, good audio makes your production. Canon gave the HF G10 multiple ways to achieve high-quality sound recording, including the aforementioned built-in microphone and headphone terminals.

The HF G10 allows you to record up to 12 hours of clear high definition video to a 32GB internal flash drive or to two SDXC-compatible memory card slots. With Relay Recording, the camcorder automatically switches video recording from the internal drive to the SD memory cards when the memory becomes full. No need then to worry about running out of recording time during a thrilling, once-in-a-lifetime shot. With SDXC memory card compatibility, you’ll have card storage capacity from more than 32GB up to 2TB and ultra-fast data transfer speeds.

The Powered IS option (a button to the bottom left of the screen) can be used to achieve more stabilisation at the telephoto reach. It’s incredibly effective at stabilising the image at 10x optical zoom, though you do need to press and hold it, and the positioning of the button means that, ergonomically, things are a little hard to handle. Unfortunately, battery life is particularly short with all the use of the touchscreen and Powered IS, meaning that time between recharges is uncomfortably short.

The Canon G10 produces nice-looking still images, though not decent enough for any enlargement beyond an 11x20cm print. Colours are vivid without being oversaturated, and the camcorder exposes correctly pretty much all the time. Dynamic range is excellent with good definition between shadow and highlight areas, with only a really small amount of blown highlights in extreme situations.

REVIEWS:

cnet.com.au reviews writes:

“Provided you’ve got a wallet padded enough to take the blow, the Canon Legria HF G10 is an excellent high-end camcorder with a wealth of features. A few usability quirks here and there, as well as a frustrating in-camera editing experience, stops us from giving the HF G10 a glowing recommendation with an Editors’ Choice award.”

trustedreviews.com reviews writes:

“Canon’s LEGRIA HF G10 is close to being a perfect camcorder for video enthusiasts or professionals looking for a second unit for quick handheld work. Only the lack of a standard-sized accessory shoe and the price let it down. These two factors mean this camcorder doesn’t quite grab our very top recommendation. But it shoots great-looking video, particularly in low light, and has supremely easy manual control, making this a very tempting proposition.”

camcorderinfo.co.uk reviews writes:

“We’re impressed with the HF G10 in terms of performance and capability, but the camcorder’s £1235price tag may be too high for most consumers. You are getting a lot for your money, though, and for people who want access to professional-grade controls, paying around $1500 for a camcorder isn’t that bad. If you have more cash to spend, Canon does have the professional XA10 camcorder, which is identical to the HF G10 except it has a removable handlebar with XLR audio ports (and it costs around $2000).”

reviews.cnet.co.uk writes:

“If you’re comparing camcorders at the top of the range, the Canon Legria HF G10 certainly has plenty going for it, particularly in terms of image quality and manual controls. It’s bigger and lacks certain features when compared to similar models from other manufacturers, however, and it’s also one of the most expensive consumer camcorders currently available. The G10 is an undeniably high achiever, you have to wonder whether the marginal performance edge over some rivals is worth the extra cost.”

The Canon XF300 Video Camera has a similar custom preset setup as Canon’s previous pro models. It has similar audio features to Canon’s pro HDV camcorders. It is equipped with a Canon L-series HD Video Lens combining a 29.3mm equivalent wide angle with fast maximum aperture (f/1.6) and 18x zoom, 3CMOS sensor system and a DIGIC DV III processing engine.

The zoom and focus rings have physical end stops when used in manual mode, for fast and repeatable operation. An independent iris ring allows control of aperture, while two rocker controls are available for manual control of zoom. Canon’s unique Instant AF system also provides fast and accurate auto focus.

The Canon XF300 Video Camera offers a unique combination of image quality, affordability and compact form factor. It’s been designed to provide outstanding image quality. For the first time ever in a handheld professional video camera, the new models utilise the MPEG-2 Full HD recording codec with 4:2:2 colour sampling at up to 50Mbps, capturing broadcast-quality footage in stunning detail.

The Canon XF300 Video Camera is a landmark addition to Canon’s professional High Definition camcorder range. Featuring a new Full HD 50Mbps MPEG-2 4:2:2 codec, Compact Flash recording and a totally new camera system – including a 3CMOS sensor array and 18x zoom L-series HD Video Lens – the Canon XF300 revolutionary camcorder brings broadcast-quality HD video within reach of all professional filmmakers.

The Canon XF300 camcorder will appeal to a wider spectrum of users from documentary to action, studio to news, sports and more – than any existing Canon professional camcorder.

Sophisticated Canon XF300 camera technologies and a new MPEG-2 codec deliver the kind of outstanding imaging performance required by broadcasters and post-production houses, whilst multi-camera connectivity provides straightforward integration into studio environments.

The Canon XF300 also features a 1.55 million dot EVF with 100% coverage and a unique, front-mounted, high-resolution LCD system that can be easily switched from left to right to suit any individual and shooting situation. The largest LCD in its class at 10.1cm (4”), with a 1.23 million dot resolution, the screen offers unparalleled clarity and flexibility for High Definition shooting.

camcorderinfo.com reviews writes:

“The XF300 has been a long time coming for Canon, as all of the other major professional camcorder manufacturers have had tapeless models out for quite some time now. Still, we are very impressed with what Canon has done with the XF300 from a design perspective. The camcorder has a wonderful LCD and viewfinder setup, excellent manual control features, and many quick-access dials and switches to make settings as easy to adjust as possible.”
