The JVC Everio GZ-HD40 is a high quality AVCHD / MPEG-2 dual-format camcorder. The JVC HD40 allows you to access to the superior long time compression afforded by AVCHD.

Our Rating ****~ (4/5)

Good: Excellent video quality; Two HD format options; Full manual controls

Bad: No optical image stabilisation; Confusing menu system; Some design quirks

The JVC Everio GZ-HD40 is the world’s first AVCHD / MPEG-2 dual-format camcorder allowing access to the superior long time compression afforded by AVCHD, as well as MPEG-2′s superior editing and post-production environment. The JVC GZ-HD40 offers 1920 x 1080 Full HD recording in one formats to a 120GB internal hard disk drive. The JVC HD40 has a 120GB hard disk drive for up to 50 hours of AVCHD Full HD video recording, and a docking station with the requirements of the prosumer or high-end enthusiast in mind.

Using the same technology as GENESSA HD displays, this function outputs a 1080 scanning line image at progressive 60fps so you can enjoy uncompromising picture quality on a TV that accepts 1080P input. With progressive, the jaggy diagonals you’d get with interlace images are smoothed out, for a clearer image.

Digital camera world sells the JVC Everio GZ-HD40 Super cheap cameras sell the JVC Everio GZ-HD40 JR camera house sales the JVC Everio GZ-HD40 BK camera house sales the JVC Everio GZ-HD40 Gerry Gibbs camerahouse sell the JVC Everio GZ-HD40 Mandurah camera house sell the JVC Everio GZ-HD40

CMOS chips using newly developed interpolation algorithm. This algorithm generates virtual pixels to provide image information beyond the 1920×1080 Full HD imaging.

In the XP mode, video is recorded at a high bit rate of 17.0 Mbps average. Compared to other systems using a lower bit rate, the resulting image offers higher quality with clearer visible details.

The new high powered HD Gigabrid image processing chip includes 7 noise reduction technologies in addition to the dual AVCHD and MPEG-2 Codecs, assuring optimum images for recordings made in either format.

In the FHD mode, video is recorded at a high bit rate of 26.6 Mbps average. Compared to other systems using a lower bit rate, the resulting image offers higher quality with clearer visible details.

Regardless of the model, HD Everio is ready to go the distance. The combination of the high-capacity 120GB hard disk drive and the compression-efficient AVCHD format allows the JVC GZ-HD40 to store up to 50 hours of Full HD 1920×1080 video recordings.

Every Everio can conveniently record digital still images. Just switch to the image mode and then press the snapshot button. To take your snapshot. Record your snapshot to either the HDD or a micro SD card. It’s your choice. Record up to a 2432 x 1368 image.

Palm sized for superior mobility. JVC made the Full HD camcorder smaller and lighter. It is barely over a pound even with the battery attached.

In addition to a built-in hard disk drive, HD Everio also has a slot for microSD/SDHC Card so you can store video and stills on this commonly available memory card. (Card is not supplied.)

cnet reviews the JVC Everio GZ-HD40 and writes:
“For a high-def camcorder priced less than US$1,000, the JVC Everio GZ-HD40 has a lot to offer — especially if you’re into manual settings and are not easily intimidated by digging through a convoluted menu system. However, the lack of optical image stabilisation is regrettable for a camcorder of this calibre.”

pcworld reviews the JVC Everio GZ-HD40 and writes:

“The JVC Everio GZ-HD40 records AVCHD at 17, 12, and 5mbps. It can also capture 30mbps MPEG-2 TS (transport stream) files at 1920×1080 pixels or as a 1440×1080, HDV-compatible 1440 CBR file. The MPEG-2 video looks slightly better than the 17-mbps AVCHD, thanks to smoother colour and increased sharpness. The trade-off: on the 120GB hard drive, you can store just 10 hours of MPEG-2 TS content, versus 15 hours of 17-mbps AVCHD.”

digitalversus reviews the JVC Everio GZ-HD40 and writes:
“The most interesting aspect of this docking station is the inclusion of a FireWire connection which allows you to upload video quickly to a computer.”

engadgethd reviews the JVC Everio GZ-HD40 and writes:
“One of the first things we noticed is that the camcorder turned on as soon as the flip-out LCD was, um, flipped out. Some may love this, some may despise it. It sort of grew on us, to be honest — particularly since it enabled lighting fast boot-up after the initial turn on sequence. In other words, shutting the screen once it was booted on put it in some form of sleep mode, and flipping it back open enabled us to capture time-sensitive moments with ease.”

reviewed reviews the JVC Everio GZ-HD40 and writes:
“Experienced users will appreciate the level of control the GZ-HD40 offers. Manual aperture, shutter speed, white balance, and several other controls are all included. You’ll also find the best manual focus on the market.”

cnet reviews the JVC Everio GZ-MS120 and writes:
“Keeping standard-definition minicamcorders competitive against cheaper pocket video cams capable of 720p HD video has basically come down to two features: storage and optical zoom.”

Our Rating ***~~ (3/5)

The JVC GZ-HM200 records full HD 1920 x 1080 video onto dual SD cards. This technology allows video to be continuously recorded from one card to the other. The absence of a hard drive makes the JVC GZ-HM200 among the lightest HD camcorders available. With the bundled software package, video can be directly exported into the iTunes library, thus making the video available for viewing on an iPod or iPhone. Along with the easy archiving and disc burning feature common to past Everio camcorders, a simple YouTube uploading tool is also available in the software package.

The KONICA MINOLTA HD lens and 2.7″ LCD help by giving you a lens specially designed for capturing HD video and a wide display on which to compose and playback your video. Let’s not forget the AVCHD UXP mode with a bit rate of up to 24Mbps, for improved clarity and detail.

The JVC Everio GZ-HM200 is also equipped with HDMI V.1.3 with x.v.Color. Among the colors that the human eye can see, x.v.Color technology, based on the xvYCC color standard, can display 100 percent compared to about 55 percent with sRGB. So when connected to an x.v.Color compatible HDTV, the pristine world of high definition can be enjoyed to its fullest.

• KONICA MINOLTA HD Lens
The KONICA MINOLTA HD Lens is specially designed for capturing Full HD video and stills and features a 20x optical zoom, which brings far off subjects up-close with virtually no loss in image quality.

• 2.7″ LCD Display
The LCD on the JVC GZ-HM200 provides a 16:9 display on which to compose and playback video and stills. JVC’s improved Laser Touch Operation system lets you navigate the camera’s basic controls and menu selections on the side and bottom of the screen.

• Still Image Capture
The JVC Everio GZ-HM200 doubles as a high resolution digital still camera. Capture beautiful 1920 x 1080 JPEGs with the camera and save them to the HDD or microSD/SDHC memory cards.

• Creative Control and Workflow Features
One-Touch Export to iTunes
One-Touch Upload to YouTube
Direct Backup: One-Touch backup to PC
Auto Illumi Light for recording in low light settings
HDMI V.1.3 with x.v.Color for increased color reproduction
Digest Playback: 5 minute montage of 60 minutes of video
Direct DVD: One-Touch DVD creation with optional SHARE STATION

• Hybrid Recording
Record over 5 hours of 1920 x 1080i high definition video to two 32GB SD/SDHC cards in the dual memory slots of the JVC GZ-HM200.

• 3.05MP 1/4.1″ CMOS Sensor
The 1/4.1″ CMOS sensor in the JVC Everio HM200 captures video and stills with true HD clarity and quality. Helping the sensor do its job would be, JVC’s HD Gigabrid Premium video engine, which optimizes image quality along with reducing the camera’s power consumption and GENESSA processing to make the most out of the HD signal.

“This handful of silver and black will easily slip into a handbag or an inside coat pocket. Its small and dainty controls are not designed for the serious videographer, but it has the HD spec and features to enable casual users to snap and video high quality images.”

camcorderinfo reviews the JVC Everio GZ-HD320 and writes:
“The GZ-HD320 is only JVC’s second generation model to use a CMOS sensor. It’s smaller than the sensor in the GZ-HD40, which had a 1/3-inch CMOS. However, it seems likely that this is not the replacement for the HD40, merely an expansion of the HD line. We know that JVC is working on something big right now, a 9-megapixel camcorder, though any more details are scarce.”

Digitalcamera HQ reviews the JVC Everio HD GZ-HD320 and writes:
“The GZ-HD320 is a slight upgrade on the similar HD300; it offers 120GB of internal storage versus the HD300′s 60GB. This high-definition camcorder has a 1/4.1″ 3.05Mp CMOS sensor and x.v. Color technology, which can see 100% of the color range of the human eye. JVC’s HD Gigabrid Premium video engine supplies optimal image quality and less power usage than older models, resulting in longer battery life.”

Camcorder Reviews reviews the JVC Everio HD GZ-HD320 and writes:
“The JVC Everio GZ-HD320 is a great high capacity digital camcorder to own that is lightweight and small in size. It also doubles as a basic still image camera as well where photos can be taken while recording although some photos may need sharpening. The most important thing about this camera is its ease of use and the GZ-HD320 successfully does that by offering easy options to transfer videos to all kinds of destinations.”

JVC GZ-HD320 – Konica Minolta Lens
A new Konica Minolta HD lens, developed especially for Everio, provides a high-performance “eye” for the capture of Full HD resolution images, and also delivers a high optical zoom ratio of 20x which is among the highest for HD camcorders.

pcauthority reviews the JVC Everio GZ-HD300 and writes:
“So the Everio GZ-HD300 is very much a point-and-shoot camcorder. But that doesn’t mean it has inferior image quality. It can’t compete with premium models, but in decent lighting it provides very good colour and the high data rate keeps compression artefacts to a minimum.”

geek.com reviews the JVC Everio GZ-HD300 and writes:
“The camcorder is quite small, which is one of its main strengths, but consumers will want to keep in mind the implications of this. There are few advanced features, like microphone connections, and users should not expect to see an accessory shoe or things along those lines. “

“The Everio GZ-HD300 represents the latest technology in high-definition camcorders. It is capable of recording video in full HD with its CMOS sensor, at a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, providing high levels of detail and definition.”

Trusted Reviews reviews the JVC Everio GZ-HD300 and writes:
“The JVC Everio GZ-HD300, like other Everios before it, is a bit of a maverick. Although a number of the smaller camcorder manufacturers have attempted to shoehorn HD video quality into a pocket-friendly format, only Sony’s HDR-TG3 has come close to getting the balance right. But JVC achieves superior image quality and adds over five hours of storage in a still very compact package.”

JVC GZ-HD300 – Konica Minolta Lens
A new Konica Minolta HD lens, developed especially for Everio, provides a high-performance “eye” for the capture of Full HD resolution images, and also delivers a high optical zoom ratio of 20x which is among the highest for HD camcorders.

JVC GZ-HD300 – Blu-ray Compatible
All HD Everios now feature the new AVCHD UXP mode with an unprecedented bit rate of up to 24Mbps to deliver more detailed, sharper images with less noise. UXP mode is ideal for storing to Blu-ray or an external hard disk drive. All the recording modes for HD Everio models–UXP, XP, SP, and EP–use Full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution.

With Everio, you don’t have to use the power switch each time you operate because the power is linked to the LCD’s opening and closing. Just open the LCD; the power turns on and the lens cover automatically opens. Just close the LCD to power off and close the lens cover too.

The new hybrid Everio GZ-X900, or Everio X, is a small, light, all-in-one camera that offers the powerful shooting combination of Full HD video and nine -megapixel still photos.

“The JVC Everio GZ-X900 is a solid performer that comes very close to being the perfect combination of camcorder and still photo camera. There are bells and whistles aplenty too, but it’s hard to swallow the overblown price, especially when a few crucial pieces of the puzzle — namely 1080p video and a longer zoom — are missing.”

“The Everio GZ-X900 is another courageous move, although in many ways it is classic JVC. Despite having a very compact format, it packs in a much higher-end specification than you would expect. Thanks to its use of SDHC memory for recording, the X900 weighs under 300g. But inside is a massive 1/2.33in CMOS sensor with a gross resolution of 10.3-megapixels.”

“Opening the LCD panel reveals the 2.8-inch LCD and JVC’s LaserTouch controls. The cavity itself is home to some surprising new additions, including a unique collection of membrane buttons: buttons that lie beneath a single plastic surface. On the X900, these buttons control Playback/Record mode, one-touch upload and one-touch export, and display/power. This is also home to the battery cavity and HDMI output.”

crunchgear reviews the JVC Everio GZ-X900 and writes:
“The camera is fairly idiot proof and small enough to fit in a pocket or purse. It is about as big as two Flip HD cameras laid end-to-end. The styling pays homage to leather and brushed steel and Konica Minolta lens hides deep inside the case and offers shake reduction and 5X zoom. Interestingly you can actually watch the lens go absolutely nuts inside the camera when you look into the hole to the lens assembly.”

digitaltrends reviews the JVC Everio GZ-X900 and writes:
“You’ve seen the accompanying images; this is radical departure for a fully-featured camcorder. It measures 1.5 inches wide, 2.67 high, 4.9 deep and weighs 10.5 ounces fully loaded. Since there’s no hard drive, as found on most JVC Everio camcorders, this SDHC-card based model can easily be carried all day and popped into a pocket if you need a break.”

pcworld reviews the JVC Everio GZ-X900 and writes:
“Other specs lag behind what comparably priced competing models offer. You can shoot only full 1920-by-1080 high-definition video at 60 interlaced frames per second (JVC omits film-like 24p and Web-friendly 30p modes). You also get a limited 5X optical zoom lens, and the camcorder lacks jacks for headphones or external mics.”

World’s First 10.3 Mega CMOS Sensor
At the heart of the camera’s superior image quality is a 1/2.33-inch 10.3 Megapixel CMOS sensor Ч the world’s first to be used in a Full HD AVCHD camera. The high quality 9 Megapixel digital stills the camera shoots correlate directly to the un-interpolated performance of this CMOS sensor and Bayer array RGB color filter.

Full HD 1920×1080 Video with 1000 TV Lines of Horizontal Resolution
For the first time ever, this 10.3 Megapixel CMOS sensor is the source of 1920×1080/60i Full HD AVCHD format video. The camera records at a stunning 1000 TV lines of horizontal resolution Ч the theoretical maximum level of 1920×1080 Full HD.

High Speed: Continuous Still Shots and Ultra-Slow Motion Video

60fps/5.3 Megapixel Motor Drive Shooting
Everio X offers high-speed shooting, similar to the motor drive function found in some mechanical still cameras. Up to eleven 5.3 Megapixel stills can be shot at 60 frames per second (fps). A great way to capture fast-paced action in high quality digital still images.

5.3 Mega Continuous Stills

Speed Mode Shooting Speed Maximum Limit
High Speed 60fps 11 images
Medium Speed 11fps 11 images
Low Speed 4fps No limit

15fps / 9 Megapixel Motor Drive Shooting (up to 6 images)
For continuous stills with even higher image quality, you can also shoot as many as six non-interpolated 9 Megapixel stills at up to 15 frames per second (fps), a speed that rivals or surpasses what’s offered by typical 9 Megapixel DSLR cameras.

9 Mega Continuous Stills
Speed Mode Shooting Speed Maximum Limit
High Speed 15fps 6 images
Medium Speed 7fps 6 images
Low Speed 2fps No limit

High-Speed Recording (up to 600fps) for Ultra-Slow Motion Playback
The camera’s high-speed recording function shoots ultra-slow motion video to capture dynamic movement that is not visible to the naked eye. Any one of three speeds 120 frames per second (fps), 300fps and 600fps can be selected; the faster the recording speed, the slower the playback motion. With this function, approximately 2.4-second bursts of video are recorded that are then played back over a period of up to 24 seconds, providing an effective tool for sports technique analysis and nature studies.

High Speed Recording Time(approx.)
Speed Mode Images Size Rec. Time Playback Time
600fps 640×72 2.4sec. 24sec.
300fps 480×116 4sec. 20sec.
120fps 480×270 4sec. 8sec.

Newly Developed O.I.S. Camera Shake Compensation

JVC’s new proprietary optical image stabilization (OIS) system applies camera shake compensation optically using prism technology at the lens entrance to ensure effectiveness throughout the zoom range and allow high quality shooting without a tripod.

Dual Mode: 5.3 Megapixel Stills While Recording Full HD Video

Everio X also allows shooting of 1920×1080/60i Full HD video and 5.3 Megapixel stills at the same time a unique advantage of this all-in-one camera. This way, you won’t have to exit the Video mode each time you want to take a still image, thereby minimizing the chances of a missed shot.

Unique Design
The design of Everio X is a distinct departure from other camcorders, including other Everio models. About the size of a chunky smart phone, Everio X is a slab-sided rectangle without the handgrip, protrusions or indentations found on most camcorders. The design allows plenty of flexibility in how the camera is held – from below, above, or whatever suits the situation and the user’s preference. There are top-mounted zoom and record buttons, and a second set next to the LCD screen for additional shooting flexibility. The camera is black with silver accents, with the right side featuring a textured carbon fiber-like finish to provide a secure grip and resist smudges.

Small enough to easily slip into a pocket or purse, Everio X weighs just 0.66 pounds (including the internal battery and a memory card) and measures 2.6 inches tall, 4.88 inches long and just 1.46 inches wide.

The JVC Everio GY-HM100E is designed to be easy to use, making it ideal for news reporters and producers. Seasoned shooters will find that its small size lets them work in environments where larger cameras would be impractical—all while producing recordings on par with broadcast cameras.

Three ¼-inch Progressive CCDs
The JVC GY-HM100E features three newly developed ¼-inch progressive scan CCDs—one each for red, green and blue—provide rich, accurate colors. To separate primary colors, JVC has incorporated a high accuracy Fujinon glass prism and the proprietary mounting technology.

Fujinon 10:1 Zoom HD Lens
The JVC HM100E utilizes a high definition lens by Fujinon, world leader in HD lens technology. The JVC Everio GY-HM100E features 3 aspheric elements which minimize the weight and space required, while producing less distortion, ghosting, and flare. In addition, the lens surface is coated with a new Electronic Beam Coating (EBC) that greatly reduces degradation caused by light reflecting off the lens surfaces leading to greater light transmission and reduced flaring and ghosting. To protect the lens, a flip-in cover is provided, eliminating the need for an external cap.Focus is controlled manually or automatically. A smooth servo zoom is controlled with a conventional rocker on the handgrip, or manually on the lens. For close-up shooting, a macro mode allows for shooting subjects as little as 2-inches away from the lens. Exposure (iris) is automatically or manually controlled, letting the shooter adjust the depth of focus by selecting the appropriate F stop. The current F stop is displayed in the viewfinder in the manual mode.

An advanced JVC-developed Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) system provides effective camera-motion compensation without any of the quality loss associated with digital image stabilization systems.

Newly Designed 1080p Digital Processor
JVC’s digital signal processor (DSP) processes all images as full 1920×1080 progressive signals, providing the maximum image information to work with regardless of the actual recording mode that is used. Also integrated into the chip are five digital noise reduction technologies that evaluate the signal and apply the appropriate compensation while increasing vertical resolution by about 30%.

Native File Recording
The JVC GY-HM100E incorporates JVC’s Native File Recording technology that stores video in the ready-to-edit format used by Apple’s Final Cut Pro™ non-linear editing system. The “.mov” files created in the camera can be easily dragged onto the NLE timeline without conversion or rewrapping, saving time while keeping the recorded material first generation. There is no need to use an intermediate codec.

The JVC HM100E can also store files in the ISO Base Media File Format (MPEG-2 Long GOP), compatible with all major non-linear editing systems. In this mode, the files and folders are recorded so that they can be easily accessed in the post production process.

The JVC GY-HM100E records audio as uncompressed LPCM data in both Final Cut Pro™ and ISO formats.

Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) memory card recording
The JVC Everio GY-HM100E records on widely available SDHC Class 6 memory cards, presently available in capacities up to 32GB. The JVC HM100E provides 2 memory card slots, for a total of up to 64GB of on board storage—enough for more than 6 hours* of continuous HD recording. (The camera automatically begins recording on the second card when the first card fills up.) Being able to quickly switch cards with dual slots is invaluable in a breaking news situation where a producer may wish to begin editing while the shooter is still capturing footage.

SDHC cards are highly reliable with no moving parts, no pins to break nor sockets to clog. Unlike competing solid state media, the per-minute cost of SDHC memory is comparable to video tape. Moreover, SDHC media is the first practical solid state solution to physical archive.

Still picture capture capability
Create 2 megapixel still images (1920 x 1080) with either a live grab, or from recorded video. Since the CCDs are progressively scanned, still images are crystal clear, even if there is motion in the scene. With the JVC GY-HM100E, you can copy or move still images from one memory card to another allowing you to store still images on one card, and video on the other.

Uncompressed Audio with Manual Controls
The JVC Everio GY-HM100E records 2 channels of uncompressed LPCM (linear pulse code modulated) 16 bit audio sampled at 48Khz. Audio levels can be controlled manually, or automatically using AGC. An audio meter is provided in the LCD and VF displays to facilitate adjustment. Balanced XLR connectors are provided on the handle for an external microphone and/or wireless receiver. 48V phantom power is available for each microphone. Versatile input switching allows the microphone signal to be directed to the desired channel. A shotgun microphone is provided, as well as a built-in stereo microphone for ambient sound pickup.

Compact Hand-held Form Factor
The JVC GY-HM100E is the smallest pro format 3-CCD camcorder available–about the size of the lens of a 2/3-inch camera. At only 3.3 lbs, it can be used comfortably for hours, and without the need for clumsy support bracing. Its size makes it ideal for hand-held POV use and for applications where a full size camera would be impractical such as traveling into potentially hostile situations. For a smaller footprint and less conspicuous shooting, the handle can be easily removed. When media needs to be concealed, Micro-SDHC memory cards can be used with a card adapter.

Versatile Manual Controls
When operating the camera in the manual mode, depth of field can be adjusted by manually setting the iris. Aperture priority automatically selects the correct shutter setting based on the iris selection. Shutter can be manually adjusted from 1/4 to 1/10000 sec. Other manual adjustments include:

- LoLux mode – a JVC exclusive feature that permits shooting in adverse lighting conditions
- H detail & V detail Adjustment
- KNEE Setting (AUTO/LOW/MID/HIGH)
- Zebra pattern which range specification is possible
- Color matrix/Gain Adjustment
- Gain settings of 0,3,6,9,12,15,18 dB & ALC can be assigned to the “L/M/H” gain switch
- Gamma Adjustment which gives rich expression of gradation
