Neutral Density Filters increase exposure time creating a sense of motion.

Neutral Density Filters increase exposure time creating a sense of motion.

Many People think the use of filters in photography has become redundant. The truth is, with the advent of digital imaging and image manipulation programs, the use of filters has become even more desirable. It is now even easier to get great results with digital. The photographer now experiments in a live environment and no longer waits for processing and final prints to see their work.

How do I get started with Cokin filters?

Getting started does not need to be an expensive exercise. If you have an SLR camera all you need to know is the filter thread size of the lens. This will be written on the very front in millimeters on most lenses (Diameter ∅ mm). Armed with the filter thread diameter select a Ring Adapter from the Cokin ring adapter category below. Sizes available from Cokin are from 48mm to 82mm with a universal model (P499) also available. Once selected you can now choose your Filter Holder. There are models for wide angle lenses so make sure you get the correct model for your lenses focal length. With the filter holder and ring adapter you now have the means with which to attach Cokin filters to your camera, all that remains is the selection of your filters. There are many available, ranging from Neutral Density to Colour Graduated and Special Effects filters. A good place to start is with an ND or Neutral Density type. The ND filter limits the amount of light entering your camera and will increase the exposure time when used. Increased exposure time results in better detail and will enable the photographer to capture a sense of motion in their images. Check out the the graduated ND and graduated coloured filters also, these give great effects in landscape photography, especially those with clouds! Cokin have a range of accessories for use with their filters and filter holders including; protective lens caps, lens hoods, adapters for other types of filters and storage boxes and wallets.
