The Olympus TG-1 is the world’s first rugged camera to incorporate an ultra-bright, high-speed f2.0 lens, so you can capture high-quality images at blazing fast shutter speeds, even in low-light conditions. The camera’s three-inch high-resolution OLED display (610K dots) provides excellent visibility in bright situations, enabling you to compose the perfect shot in direct sunlight. It has a protective coatings help to prevent scratches and cut down on reflective glare, and the new lens on the Olympus TG-1 iHS transforms your photographs with the same FAST AF system technology found in Olympus PEN® cameras.

The Olympus Tough TG-1 iHS combines incredible durability with iHS technology, the world’s first high-speed bright f2.0 lens on a Tough camera and converter-lens compatibility to create a versatile system camera. The combination of durability and outstanding image quality make it possible to shoot in even the harshest conditions.

Around the 4x 25-100mm zoom lens, Olympus built in a removable surround that allows you to screw on an adapter for converter lenses. A fisheye lens for dramatic wide-angle shots as well as a telephoto converter lens will be available to extend the optical zoom from 4x to 6.8x. Both lenses can be used down to 40 feet.

The TG-1 has a bright f2.0 maximum aperture. While it probably won’t give you a shallow depth of field like you’d get with an f2.0 lens on a digital SLR or mirrorless compact system camera, it will let in more light, which will come in very handy underwater and in other low-light situations. The ring around the lens easily unscrews, allowing you to attach the converter ring.

The Olympus Tough TG-1 lens may not be terrifically fast at the long end of the zoom but is usefully bright at its wide angle setting, especially for underwater photography. There will also be the option to add a full underwater housing for working at greater depths. The TG-1 is tougher than previous Tough models, being waterproof to 12m (40ft) and shockproof from a height of 2m (6.6ft) and will have optional waterproof fisheye and telephoto converter lenses available. The TG-1 iHS is built around a 1/2.3″-type 12MP back-lit CMOS sensor and a TruePic VI processor to make the most of its output.

The TG-1 is designed specifically to keep up with the on-the-go photographer, the new Super Sport Mode combines high-speed autofocus with extra fast shutter speeds – up to 1/2000 – to freeze the action. Conveniently located on the dial, this mode captures five shots in a high-speed burst to ensure crisp shots in even the most extreme action sport settings. Low Light Mode is perfect for capturing the mood of low-light indoor scenes, beautiful sunsets or late night outdoor festivities without ruining the ambience with a bright flash. Shoot like a pro with 10 frames-per-second high-speed burst shooting and 1080p Full HD videos (1920×1080 pixels) or 60 frames-per-second (3mp) at the touch of button, allowing for slow-motion playback.

The camera has built-in GPS and an electronic compass. Adding to the TG-1 iHS’s higher-end features is a very fast autofocus speed–Olympus says it’s the same fast autofocus system found in its interchangeable-lens Pen cameras–and Linear PCM audio recording in video mode.

The Olympus Tough TG-1 iHS looks like an advanced point-and-shoot camera that just happens to be rugged, thanks to a wide-aperture F2.0 lens, a 12-megapixel CMOS sensor optimized for low-light shooting, a 3-inch-diagonal OLED display, and 1080p high-definition video capture.

It also includes a 1080p Full HD Video, 4X optical zoom, 8x digital zoom (“super-resolution”), 3-inch high resolution OLED display (610k dots), LED illuminator in the front, geo-tagging with GPS and e.compass functions enabling route tracking using Google Earth and Picasa web applications. The converter ring allows expanding the optical capabilities with a lens converter adapter, waterproof Fisheye Converter Lens or Teleconverter Lens.

The Sony Alpha slt-A57 introduces some new soft features, most notably Auto Portrait Framing, which uses face detection to better position the subject in the frame and when cropping in. Sadly, it interpolates using Sony’s horribly named “By Pixel Super Resolution Technology” to make sure you have 16 megapixels’ worth of photo instead of just leaving it at the cropped size.

The Sony Alpha SLT-A57 DSLR camera incorporates Translucent Mirror Technology that allows continuous autofocus full-time in live view mode, even during Full HD movie shooting. A 16.1 megapixel APS HD CMOS sensor offers exceptional resolution with low noise, whilst 12 fps continuous shooting ensures perfect capture of fast action shots. Its 15-point AF system with 3 cross-type sensors and improved subject tracking delivers fast and accurate focusing.

The SLT-A57 offers new features such as Auto Portrait Framing that helps users determine the most effective composition and comes with 11 Picture Effects built-in. The A57 also sports a high resolution 921k-dot 3.0” flip-out LCD screen and ultra-high resolution 100% field of view Tru-Finder electronic viewfinder.

The SLT-A57 uses a different sensor — the one from the mirrorless NEX-5N — plus the newer image processor. That combo makes it likely that it will deliver better photo quality.

The Sony Alpha SLT-A57 combines the quality and control reminiscent of a professional DSLR and pairs it with the convenience and efficiency of a point and shoot camera. This melding of technologies allows you to make outstanding imagery with a simplistic interface and functionality. Featuring a 16.1MP APS-C Exmor HD CMOS sensor, this camera is able to capture high quality stills and video with excellent low-light sensitivity. It also features Translucent Mirror Technology for continuous AF monitoring, permitting you ensured sharpness when recording full HD 1080p video or photographing at up to 12 fps.

Its main feature is the ability to capture images at 12 frames per second in a special crop mode, three times the speed of the competition. If you prefer full frame, you’ll have to settle for only 10 frames per second. This speed is possible thanks to Sony’s pellicle mirror design, which omits the moving mirror mechanism.

The Sony A57 seems to work well enough for the 16.1-megapixel sensor. It’s also light and reasonably quiet, though not silent. I like the Mode dial on the left, with the right side left for control buttons. The mode dial has a lot of icons on it for the A57′s special modes, leaving no room for a Memory Recall function. These modes are essentially the same as are found on the A65, only with new icons for the two Auto modes.

This camera uses Sony’s Alpha-series lenses, which means the camera can get better, faster autofocus than other-post DSLR shots. I used the camera to shoot a bunch of quickly moving subjects in super-fast continuous mode, and I was very impressed at how quickly the camera could adapt to changing conditions.

“Overall, we’re pretty impressed with the Sony A57. It seems like an ideal camera for any kind of photography. I don’t generally get jazzed about unusual modes like HDR, and I seldom go for resolution-enhancement technology, as is found in the Clear Image Zoom function, but I’ll still give it a try. What’s most impressive is having access to 12 or even 10 frames per second in a sub-$800 camera. Add full-time autofocus while you shoot movies or stills, and the Sony A57 has what it takes to run the other guys over.”

ephotozine.com writes:

“The Sony Alpha A57 is the latest DSLR / SLT from Sony, and is a cut down version of the Sony Alpha A65, with a 16.2 megapixel sensor, lower resolution EVF and cropped high speed shooting mode, it offers a more affordable entry into high speed photography, with extremely quick focus, shutter response and continuous shooting. However, as it’s currently available for just £50 less the A65 and is the same size, we would recommend you look at the higher specification A65 instead.”

“The A57′s price, fast burst mode, and video options all add up to create an enticing camera option for budget-minded sports shooters and videographers.”

There aren’t any other labels except on the optics to indicate the specifications of the lens. The V-Lux 20 is also available in black only, and with its inconspicuous design, can make for stealth shooting if the shutterbug wants to take pictures without the subject noticing.

The optional manual setting of apertures and shutter speeds offers even the most demanding photographers complete creative control. With the latest advanced features such as HD movie and optional GPS image tagging, the V-Lux 20 offers the greatest possible flexibility and ease of use – for still photography or movies when you are out and about, and even for archiving pictures already taken. A camera for people who appreciate quality and love to own and use something special.

The Leica also has an on-board GPS for geotagging photos, and it works in a similar manner to the TZ10. It also has a multi-aspect ratio sensor so it can take high-resolution photos regardless of which physical image format (3:4, 2:3 or 16:9) you are shooting in.
The V-Lux 20 takes about two seconds to start up, and shutter lag measured 0.1 and 0.4 second, with and without pre-focusing, respectively. These timings are on par with the TZ10.

This camera was quick to focus on our subjects and it felt a little faster than the Lumix. However, you probably won’t notice the difference if you were to use these two compacts in bright outdoor conditions. But when we shot at night, we felt the V-Lux 20 was snappier in locking onto dimly lit subjects.

The V-Lux 20 deliverS more consistent colours even at high ISO settings of 1600. Unlike the TZ10, which showed some discolouration at high sensitivity settings, the Leica held up well. The colour reproduction of the V-Lux 20 was also commendable. The tones looked natural and had a warm touch to them. This can probably be attributed to Leica’s image processing algorithm. Combine this with a steady image stabilisation system, and we got pretty sharp pictures even when we shot handheld at night.

In good light, the autofocus is snappy. In bad lighting it still isn’t terrible but can be inaccurate at times. However, these aren’t very often as the autofocus areas are large and pretty smart.”
But it’s at a greatly inflated price of over its Panasonic counterpart and a good software bundle aside, the camera can produce superb results and HD movies used well, but whether or not its worth the extra £240 to buy it over the Lumix, only you can decide.”

“The quality at 300mm is hit or miss though. You really need good light even though the lens has a maximum aperture of 4.9 when fully zoomed out. At 300mm, you need a high shutter speed to get a crystal clear shot. Hand movement, even with the optical image stabilization can screw up your photo pretty fast. Wide open at 300mm you can get some softness but overall it’s really really good, even at 4.9 and 300mm.”

Our Rating ****~ (4/5)

Good: Onboard projector is useful (in dimly lit places), easy operation, 28mm wide-angle lens with 5x optical zoom, bundled remote control and projector stand. Bad: Picture quality can be improved, slight bulk may not appeal to all users, burst mode can be faster.

Nikon has unveiled the world’s first compact camera with an in-built projector.

The S1000pj projects images up to 40 inches in size with a VGA resolution and a maximum distance of 2 meters. The camera is supplied with a remote control and stand for ease of use. It features an optically stabilized wide angle 5x zoom lens (28-140mm equiv.), 2.7 inch LCD and a 12.1MP sensor.

Features

Sharper results with five advanced Nikon image stabilising features Optical lens shift and Electronic VR image stabilisation systems combine to help produce blur-free images. High ISO 6400 capability allows faster shutter speeds when shooting in low light or capturing fast-moving subjects. Motion Detection automatically controls shutter speed and the ISO setting to compensate for subject movement and camera shake. And, Nikon’s original BSS (Best Shot Selector) function automatically shoots a series of sequential frames and saves the one with the sharpest focus.

Nikon’s Smart Portrait System with Skin Softening Face-priority AF helps produce more satisfying portraits by adjusting focus and exposure for as many as 12 faces in the framed shot. Skin Softening function detects and analyses a framed subject’s skin, and then adjusts smoothness to produce enhanced results. Smile Timer automatically releases the shutter when the subject smiles, while its Blink Proof function shoots two sequential frames, then saves the one in which the subject’s eyes are widest open. Blink Warning presents an alert when it suspects that someone in the shot has blinked. In-Camera Red-Eye Fix automatically corrects any perceived red-eye effect before saving the image to memory.

Intelligent automated shooting modes that promote carefree shooting Nikon’s Scene Auto Selector makes it faster and easier to capture the moment by eliminating the need to manually select a scene mode to match the intended shot. This intelligent function determines the subject, analyses the surrounding settings, and then automatically selects the appropriate scene mode for optimal results. Subject Tracking enhances the shooting experience by following the subject’s movement to ensure clear focus and quick response when that special shutter opportunity presents itself. Subject Tracking even functions if the subject moves out of the frame for a second or two.

Quick Retouch Quick Retouch automatically adjusts the contrast and saturation of selected photos to create an enhanced copy with the right finishing touch.

Other Features 2.7-in. high-resolution LCD monitor with anti-reflection coated cover 16 handy scene modes for optimised shooting in various settings D-Lighting Active Zoom Auto Sort and Favorite Pictures functions Four movie modes with sound Time zone function for easy setting of multiple locations Approx. 36 MB of internal memory Hi-Speed USB connectivity

DCI writes: “If you don’t need the projector, you’d be better off with a camera that has a wider range of features. But if the projector sounds like a useful feature, the S1000pj combines a decent point & shoot camera with a projector in a small, convenient package.” Rating: N/A

Cameras.uk writes: “The projector works well and I can see it being a big hit at parties and for showing good old holiday snaps. It does add a premium to the price of the camera, so you will need to decide whether or not it is right for you. Picture quality is average and aside from the projector this is a standard point and shoot camera.” Rating: ★★★★☆

DPI writes: “I think the Nikon Coolpix S1000pj marks quite an improvement in the image quality for Nikon’s compact cameras. Though not ‘fantastic’ or class-leading in any manner, at least image quality is now on par with most of the competition. I’m glad to report that image are usable up till ISO 800 most of the time.” Rating: ★★★★☆

WDC writes: “All in all the S1000pj is a great idea that just needs to be honed in with a bit more camera oomph, a brighter, more intelligent projector and better battery life to be a truly astounding product. But hats off to Nikon for getting such an unusual, innovative and exciting new product to market.” Rating: ★★★★☆

Photoxels writes: “Overall, the images are not as detailed as we would expect, appearing at times quite soft, especially at full tele, requiring some sharpening in post processing. As is usual with cameras in this category, images at higher ISOs suffer from noise and detail loss.” Rating: N/A

KenRockwell writes: “The S1000PJ is a pretty decent camera. It zooms and focuses quickly. It has no distortion: straight lines stay straight at any zoom setting. This is the first pocket camera I’ve ever used that does this.” Rating: N/A

Our Rating ***~~ (3/5)

Good: Zippy, well executed touch-screen interface; great tap-and-shoot feature; attention-getting design.

The camera introduces a new 3.5-in., wide-screen OLED Display with approx. 288k-dot resolution. In addition to the immediately recognisable benefits of vivid colour reproduction and sharp contrast, OLED technology also improves power efficiency and allows for a thinner camera design.

Five advanced image stabilising features*1 for sharper results

Intelligent automated shooting modes that promote carefree shooting
Nikon’s Easy Auto Mode makes it faster and easier to capture the moment by eliminating the need to manually select a scene mode to match the intended shot. This intelligent function determines the subject, analyses the surrounding settings, and then automatically selects the appropriate scene mode for optimal results. “We like: Well-executed touchscreen interface; great tap-and-shoot feature; attention-grabbing design. We don’t like:Leisurely performance; in-camera battery charging might bother some; tricky to hold. CNET UK judgement: The Nikon Coolpix S70 has a top-notch touchscreen interface and eye-catching design, but you’ll definitely be paying plenty for them”
“S70 produced images of average quality. Centre sharpness was generally high, but off-centre sharpness and resolution tended to be noticeably worse, and not just in the extreme corners. Colours on the whole were true to life, but highlight clipping would often occur in contrasty lighting”

Cameras.uk writes:
“This camera offers you complete touch control. The camera is easy to operate as long as you are comfortable with screen icons rather than text based menus. Picture quality is good in a lot of instances, but sharpness can fall off in more distant scenes.”

PCMag writes:
“Nikon’s OLED-touch-screen-equipped Coolpix S70 has great potential, but mediocre image quality, a low-resolution display, and interface issues underwhelm.”
“The Nikon Coolpix S70 is a capable touchscreen camera which deserves my recommendation. It excels at shooting outdoors and in bright light, has a basket of neat features and takes good quality photos. Consider the Coolpix S70 if you’re looking for a point-and-shoot compact with a ‘cool’ touchscreen (how can multi-touch be uncool?!), but back away if you plan to shoot in low-light or moving subjects often.”
CCD; total pixels: approx. 12.39 million | With a sleek design and a choice of black, silver or white, the S640 offers style and performance." />

Our Rating ****~ (4/5)

Good: Nice design, easy to use, excellent photo quality up to ISO 200, improved autofocus and start-up performance.

Bad: High-ISO settings not worth using, no HD video.

NIKON COOLPIX S640 FEATURE HIGHLIGHTS

Four advanced image stabilising features help ensure sharper results

Nikon’s optical lens shift VR image stabilisation compensates for the effects of camera shake. High ISO 6400 capability at any image size up to its maximum of 4000 x 3000 pixels allows faster shutter speeds when shooting in low light or capturing fast-moving subjects. Motion Detection automatically controls shutter speed and the ISO setting to compensate for subject movement as well as camera shake. And, Nikon’s original BSS (Best Shot Selector) function automatically shoots a series of sequential frames and saves the one with the sharpest focus.

High-quality 2.7-in. Clear Colour Display provides a wider, clearer view

The high-quality 2.7-in. Clear Colour Display for the COOLPIX S640 features an ultra wide-viewing angle, anti-reflection coating, antifouling and water repellent layer, and screen brightness boost function.　Automatic colour correction and contrast adjustment at playback optimise image quality to match the viewing conditions, while also maximising power savings. The monitor’s new structure greatly reduces reflection and improves visibility outdoors.

Nikon’s Smart Portrait System with Skin Softening

As part of Nikon’s Smart Portrait System, a series of advanced functions help produce consistently great portraits. The new Skin Softening function automatically detects and analyses your subject’s skin and then adjusts smoothness for enhanced results. Automatically detecting as many as 12 faces in the shot, Face-priority AF helps produce satisfying portraits by adjusting focus and exposure. Smile Timer automatically releases the shutter when the priority subject smiles while the Blink Proof function automatically shoots two sequential frames and saves the one in which the subject’s eyes are wide open. In-Camera Red-Eye Fix automatically corrects any perceived red-eye effect before saving the image to memory.

Subject Tracking with auto lock-on

Subject tracking with its new auto lock-on capability automatically detects a human face and then continues to track and focus on that subject. Particularly useful when capturing children as they move naturally, Subject Tracking even functions if the subject moves out of the frame and returns within three seconds.

Quick Retouch

Quick Retouch adds the right finishing touch to your photos by automatically creating a retouched copy with the best balance of contrast and saturation.

Other Features

Macro shooting from as close as 2 cm (0.8 in.) 16 handy scene modes for optimised shooting in various settings Scene Auto Selector D-Lighting Active Zoom Auto Sort function Two movie modes with sound Time zone function for easy setting of multiple locations Approx. 45 MB of internal memory Hi-Speed USB connectivity with USB charging via Charging AC Adapter EH-68P/EH-68P (AR) or PC.

cnet writes:

“The camera is designed to be a compact camera that has dSLR-like speeds, including a quick start up time of 0.7 seconds and and auto white balance setting that’s based off digital SLRs.”

GoodGearGuide writes:
“Its picture quality is just average, as chromatic aberration and digital noise really got the better of our images; its controls need work and it’s slow to show images on its screen. The redeeming features, such as the smile detector, hardly make up for the fact that it can be a frustrating “
Rating: ★★½☆☆

Pocket-Lint writes:
“Overall, the S640 is very encouraging in terms of image quality. The combination of good lens, optical VR and low ISO image quality combine well here to produce great images. Colour and white balance (WB) are very good though the auto WB settings suffer from (the usual) slight orange colour cast under mixed lighting conditions.”
Rating: ★★★★☆

PhotographyBay writes:
“I recommend this camera for those of you looking for something simple, yet capable. It’s a decent point and shoot camera, but not necessarily one that will stand out in the crowd.”

PhotographyBlog writes:
“In summary, the Nikon Coolpix S640 is a simple-to-use point-and-shoot compact that won’t leave you hanging around, being fast and clever enough to take sharp pictures of both static and moving subjects – exactly what most family snappers want from a camera.”
Rating: ★★★★☆

HardwareSecrets writes:
“A good wide angle lens, adequate megapixels, and good zoom combine to make the Coolpix S640 a camera that does a good job across the board. It’s a camera that you can use indoors or outdoors and can take from birthday party to soccer game and be sure of always producing good solid photographs.”
“The S640 is tiny, it’s fast, and it consistently delivers first-rate images of both static and active subjects – making it a great choice for family photographers and casual shooters looking a stylish ultra-compact digicam capable of capturing great images outdoors and indoors.”
Rating: N/A

TrustedReviews writes:
“Although it doesn’t live up to Nikon’s extravagent marketing claims, the CoolPix S640 is still a very competent camera. Build quality is good, it handles well, performs briskly and takes a decent picture in a wide range of situations; low light performance is especially good. It’s not quite a bargain, but it is a nice little camera.”

Our Rating ****~ (4/5)

Good: Good lens specifications, Smart Portrait System works well, nice design, feature set.

Bad: Middle-of-the-road performance, ISO 1,600, 3,200 not worth using.

The camera’s high sensitivity of up to ISO 3200 at any image size up to its maximum of 4000 x 3000 pixels enables flexibility when shooting in low light or when capturing fast-moving subjects. This creates new opportunities to take sharper, more natural-looking photos the moment they occur.

The camera is equipped with Smart Portrait System, a series of advanced functions that help produce consistently great portraits. The new Skin Softening function automatically detects and analyses the subject’s skin and then adjusts smoothness for enhanced results. Face-priority AF automatically detects as many as 12 faces in the shot and helps produce satisfying portraits by adjusting focus and exposure. In-Camera Red-Eye Fix automatically corrects any perceived red-eye effect before saving the image to memory.

Feature Highlights
Intelligent automation contributes to carefree shooting
Scene Auto Selector eliminates the need to manually select a scene mode to match the shot, making it faster and easier to capture the moment. The camera uses this intelligent function to analyze the subject and surrounding setting and automatically selects the most appropriate of the following six scene modes to achieve optimal results — Portrait, Landscape, Night Portrait, Night Landscape, Close-up, or Backlight.

Four advanced image stabilising features help ensure sharper results Nikon’s electronic VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilisation compensates for the effects of camera shake. Motion Detection automatically controls shutter speed and the ISO setting to compensate for subject movement as well as camera shake. ISO 3200 capability at any image size up to its maximum of 4000 x 3000 pixels allows faster shutter speeds when shooting in low light or capturing fast-moving subjects. Nikon’s original BSS (Best Shot Selector) function automatically shoots a series of sequential frames and saves the one with the sharpest focus.

Quick Retouch
Quick Retouch adds the right finishing touch to your photos by automatically creating a retouched copy with the best balance of contrast and saturation.

Other Features

16 handy scene modes for optimised shooting in various settings
D-Lighting
Active Zoom
Auto Sort and Favorite Pictures functions
Four movie modes with sound
Time zone function for easy setting of multiple locations
Approx. 47 MB of internal memory
Hi-Speed USB connectivity

“The camera looks very nice and is simple to use but it lacks that “certain something” when it comes to focusing and overall performance. This camera is a camera best used for static subjects such as landscapes, subjects that will allow you to get the most from this new Nikon”
Rating: ★★★½☆

PCAdvisor writes:
“The Nikon CoolPix S570 is a 12.1-megapixel, point-and-shoot digital camera with some nifty features. It’s ideal for people who wouldn’t be comfortable with a more complex model, and for £139 you get a camera that’s also stylish.”
Rating: ★★★★☆

TrustedReviews writes:
“…it is very well made, easy and fun to use, and handles extremely well. It has above average performance, works well in low light, and the image quality is also better than most others in its class. All in all, the camera is excellent value for money.”

GoodGearGuide writes:
“We were impressed with this camera. It has a lot of great features and is an ideal camera for a novice happy snapper on a budget; and because it’s incredibly simple to use, it’s a great digital camera for a technophobe.”
Rating: ★★★★☆

CameraLabs writes:
“The most oustanding thing about the camera is its picture quality which in our outdoor real-life tests and gallery shots proved to be every bit as good as the more expensive cameras it was up against.”

The Nikon Coolpix S60 has a wealth of image-editing tools built-in, including a memo function. The Nikon S60 features 17 Scene Modes, including modes for tough-to-shoot environments such as beach/snow, sunset, dusk/dawn and fireworks shows.

nikon coolpix s60
Our Rating ***~~ (3/5)

The Nikon Coolpix S60 is originally designed for its award-winning professional D-SLRs, Expeed ensures the data obtained from the image sensor are processed at high speed and with the greatest precision.

The Nikon S60 has a 5x optical zoom-NIKKOR lens with Nikon’s original folded optics ensures the Nikon Coolpix S60 remains slim and stylish while not losing out on image quality.

The Nikon S60 camera functions are controlled by directly touching the large, 3.5-inch widescreen TFT monitor. With a wide viewing angle of approximately 160˚, viewing is easy even from a diagonal.

The S60 offers advanced features, such as Scene Auto Selector, enhanced Face Recognition, Smile Timer with blink detection, time-lapse movies, in-camera retouch and HDMi output.

When photographing friends or family, the improved Face-priority AF recognises up to 12 faces for both superb portrait photography and crisp group images, even when faces are easily underexposed in backlit conditions, overexposed in strong sunshine or moving around. The camera’s movie function and time-lapse movie can shoot 30 fps at up to 640×480 pixels.

Features :

- 3.5-inch wide touch screen high-resolution LCD
– 10.0 effective megapixels for high-precision image quality
– 5x Zoom-NIKKOR lens
– High performance image sensor shift VR image stabilization
– ISO 3200* capability
– Touch your subject to lock autofocus and exposure
– Portrait One-touch Zoom for automatic zoom
– Automatic image rotation
– Paint Function to personalize photos with handwritten memos, colorful borders and stamps
– HDMI connectivity
– Nikon’s new Scene Auto Selector
– HD Pictmotion slideshow with HDTV
– Smile Timer – automatically releases the shutter when the subject smiles
– Draw Function
– Three Unique Nikon Image Innovations for high performance – Face-priority AF, In-Camera Red-Eye Fix and D-Lighting

All-new 3.5-inch wide LCD monitor featuring touch screen control
The 3.5-inch widescreen LCD newly developed for the COOLPIX S60 is a delight to both the eyes and the fingers. Its large size, high-resolution, 16:9 widescreen display, and 160° wide-viewing angle alone make picture-taking and playback more fun and exciting. But it’s the breakthrough excitement of the new optimized touch screen interface that makes the experience magic. From the user-friendly HOME screen display choices to the easy-to-read and easy-to-understand menu and setup displays, all operations are quick, intuitive, and fun. And the screen features a hard-coated finish that protects against damage and wear, and anti-reflection coating for better display in bright situations.

Automated and optimized shooting modes
Nikon’s new Scene Auto Selector helps enhance the carefree shooting experience by automatically distinguishing the type of setting in which you are shooting and then selecting the scene mode appropriate to that situation. The Smile Timer function automatically releases the shutter when the camera detects a smile on the face of the subject, which means always capturing those precious smiles in the brief instants they appear. And Blink Warning displays a message when it detects that a subject has blinked, offers quick magnified visual confirmation, and allows the shot to be retaken immediately to help ensure the desired results.

VR image stabilization for sharper results
Compensating for the effects of camera shake to realize sharper results and contribute to a more reassuring shooting experience, image sensor shift VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization frees you to enjoy capturing special moments without worrying about slight hand movements. This is particularly helpful when taking advantage of the 5x zoom lens telephoto focal lengths, or when shooting in lower lighting conditions.

ISO 3200 capability provides extended shooting range
Light sensitivity can be manually set as high as ISO 3200*, adding the power to shoot sharper, more natural-looking photos in lower lighting conditions, or to capture fast-moving subjects with outstanding clarity. And the new image-processing system produces clear results with minimal noise when shooting with high ISO settings. Auto ISO control is also available, with the camera automatically setting the optimal sensitivity across a range of ISO 64-800.

*ISO 3200 is available only for image sizes of 5M (2592 x 1944) or smaller.

Reviews

DCI writes:
”Image quality, however, was disappointing due to high noise levels (noise starts to become visible at ISO 100), color fringing and some image softness. Noise starts to get really bad at ISO 200 and pictures look very muddy at ISO 400.“
Rating:N/A

PhotographyBlog writes:
“The S60 is still a fun camera to use that produces good results in the majority of places that its target audience will use it. If you don’t expect too much from it, then the Coolpix S60 is a stylish, if rather expensive, beginner’s camera with a twist.”
Rating: ★★★½☆

Photoxels writes:
“Coolpix S60 delivers good image quality at ISO 64. Using a high ISO means you might be able to take low-light pictures but be aware that the noise issue and loss of image detail will limit pictures taken at high ISOs to small prints and for Web display only.”
Rating: ★★★★

Cameras.uk writes:
“Picture quality compares well with other pocket digital cameras. The touch controlled LCD screen will appeal to gadget lovers. The camera is easy enough to use, looks good and is certainly an option to add to your shortlist.”
Rating: ★★½☆☆

PCMag writes:
” the camera can handle up to ISO 800 before noise makes the picture unbearably grainy. But images did show more than an average amount of noise at lower ISOs”
Rating: ★★★★☆

Pocket-Lint writes:
“Overall the interface is very easy to use and the touchscreen responsive reacting quickly to our zoom requests for example. On-screen icons are big enough even for the fat fingered.”

CNET writes:
“The bottom line: Fun features and chic styling make the Nikon Coolpix S60 a tasty choice for casual point-and-shoot use. However, if you need speed or snapshot perfection, this isn’t your camera.”

Our Rating ****~ (4/5)

Good: Small, pocketable camera; Great shots in favourable conditions; Top features

Bad: Struggles with low-light conditions

Even with a wideangle 4x zoom NIKKOR lens, the S3000 only measures 19mm thick, making it the ideal size for fitting in your pocket or bag, ready to whip out for that perfect moment.

The Nikon Coolpix S3000 is all about having fun while taking great pictures, not spending time setting up manual controls or changing the settings only to find that great shot has been missed.

The buttons are larger making it quick and easy to get the function you want and the zoom is in easy thumb reach at the top of the camera so you can concentrate on capturing the action. The image-processing system is optimised based on Nikon’s original image-processing concept, EXPEED. You can also charge the camera from your PC or laptop with the USB charger adapter when a plug socket isn’t available.

This camera will make sure nothing stands in your way for taking a great shot. The 2.7 inch LCD screen with an anti-reflective coating makes it easy to shoot and share your pictures, even in bright sunlight. And in whatever situation you find yourself in, the Scene Auto Selector will make sure your surroundings are captured perfectly, without having to change any settings.

The S3000 has a range of advanced auto functions to make sure your pictures look just how you want them to. As part of Nikon’s Smart Portrait System, a series of advanced functions help produce consistently great portraits. The face-priority AF system automatically recognises up to 12 people in your shot, adjusting the focus and exposure, while the skin softening function automatically detects and smoothes your subjects skin tone for the best results. And if you’re subject is on the move, subject tracking can lock on to it and continue to track and focus on it until the moment you decide to take your picture.

Smile Timer automatically releases the shutter when the main subject smiles while the Blink Proof function automatically shoots two sequential frames and automatically saves the one in which the subject’s eyes are open. There’s even a warning if someone has their eyes shut when you’ve taken the picture, to allow you to re-take the picture, so you don’t have to discover this when you’re reviewing your pictures later on. Finally, the anti-red eye function automatically corrects the red-eye effect before saving the image.

“if most of your shots are taken in bright conditions – or if you’re happy with the output of our sample images in dimmer light – then the COOLPIX S3000 is a great choice for the money. Nikon has delivered another easy-to-use point-and-shoot compact which might be lacking the frills of its rival from Canon, but produces equally good images (in decent light) while crucially hitting a comfortably lower price point.“
“This is a great all-round camera that fits a lot of high-end features in a small body. Best of all is its price, which makes it a truly affordable snapper. The downside is that challenging conditions will test the camera beyond its limits.”
“Unfortunately, image quality is generally on the whole fairly disappointing. White balance is unreliable, while softness and fringing dominate the corners of the frame. However, when the S3000 gets it right, it’s capable of good results”
“the S3000 is a user-friendly entry-level camera. It’s ultra-compact, which means it can go with you anywhere. The downside of the Nikon S3000 is that it just isn’t up to snuff on image quality.“
“This is a cheaper pocket digital camera. It scores highly for ease of use and it also carries a lower price tag for a pocket camera from Nikon. I did find some issues with picture quality.“
