The Sigma APO 100-300mm f/4 EX DG HSM is a very good telephoto zoom lens. The Sigma APO 100-300mm has a new multi layer lens coating and lens design to reduce flare and ghosting.
The Sigma APO 100-300mm f/4 EX DG HSM lens provides a large constant F4 maximum aperture at all focal lengths. The use of Apochromatic design and 4 SLD (The Special Low Dispersion) glass elements (two SLD glass elements are utilized in the front lens group and two in the rear group) for full correction of chromatic aberration and providing a high level of optical performance. The AF drive for Sigma SA, Canon and Nikon cameras is equipped with silent, responsive and high speed HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) as well as fulltime manual focus.
Reduces flare and ghosting
New multi layer coating of this lens gives superb color performance whilst cutting down flare and ghosting caused by reflections from the digital image sensor. High optical performance is demonstrated throughout the entire zoom range.
Employs SLD (Super Low Dispersion) Glass
Two SLD glass elements are used in the front lens group and two in the rear lens group for superior correction of several aberrations for superior image quality throughout the entire zoom range.

Silent high-speed AF with HSM
The Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) ensures a silent, high-speed AF function as well as full-time manual focusing capability for Sigma, Canon, and Nikon-D mount lenses.
Ephotozine reviews the Sigma APO 100-300mm f/4 EX DG HSM Lens and writes:
“As a step up from the run of the mill >300mm zooms this lens is certainly worth considering. The constant aperture and faster, quieter autofocusing make all the difference, ably helped by a constant length and internal focus mechanism to make handling a joy. Four SLD glass elements in the construction help to make a nice improvement to the output quality too.”
slrlensreview.com reviews the Sigma APO 100-300mm f/4 EX DG HSM Lens and writes:
“All-in-all, Sigma 100-300mm f/4 EX DG HSM is an excellent lens. Combination of constant (moderately fast) aperture, excellent build and image quality and affordable (for a telephoto zoom lens) price allowed Sigma to create a very attractive package that should be quite popular among photographers. As mentioned earlier, for those of you using an APS-C camera, this can become a dedicated sports/wildlife lens (not so much for owners of full-frame bodies, since 300mm range is somewhat limiting and image quality here is lagging). And at 100mm, the lens can be a dedicated portrait lens that will give a run for image quality even to the best telephoto primes.”
Photozone reviews the Sigma APO 100-300mm f/4 EX DG HSM Lens and writes:
“The Sigma AF 100-300mm f/4 EX HSM DG is one of the most impressive Sigma lenses tested to date. It is able to deliver a near-flawless performance with great resolution figures, low vignetting, low distortions, low CAs and a very decent bokeh (albeit slightly underdeveloped regarding the moderate max. aperture unless your main subject is fairly close). It works reasonably well with the Sigma AF 1.4x DG EX converter but there’s no free lunch here for obvious reasons. The Sigma is quite a monster of a lens but the combination of speed and focal length range simply takes its toll regarding size and weight requirements. The build quality is exceptionally high and combined with the snappy AF it was a joy to use the lens in the field.”
Inner focusing and inner zooming systems
An inner focusing system eliminates front lens rotation, making the lens particularly suitable for using the petal-type lens hood supplied and circular polarizing filters. Since focusing and zooming do not change its overall length, ease of handling and operation is assured. A rotating tripod mount can be conveniently detached if required.
APO Tele-Converter EX (optional)
High-speed focusing is possible when this lens is used with dedicated APO EX tele-converters (1.4x and 2x). With the optional APO tele-converter 1.4x EX, it works as AF zoom lens from 140mm to 420mm F5.6. With APO tele-converter 2.0x EX, it works as a manual focus zoom lens from 200mm to 600mm F8.
